What should I do if my framer damaged my art?, by jhspaybar on May 19, 2017 16:01:20 GMT 1, I just had a piece framed and it was supposed to be floated with archival hinges behind museum glass. When I went to pick it up yesterday it had the edges under the mat rather than floating and the person who helped me said it was dry mounted and that's reversible. I freaked out and she checked her system and said she'd misspoke and she's still in training and it isn't dry mounted. Now of course I'm very worried, and I'd like to see how I can verify it's actually not dry mounted when they're done floating it.
If it is dry mounted, what should I ask of the framer? Should I ask them to make an insurance claim on their E&O policy for the replacement cost of the art?

The print will be much thicker on a piece of board. Why don't you just go now before they're finished and inspect the back of print? Or at the very least have them send you a picture? Better to be proactive now than to have to unframe again to inspect.
The framer should also have insurance if they did damage and can file a claim.

What should I do if my framer damaged my art?, by ilmambo on May 19, 2017 16:34:08 GMT 1, just ask to inspect the print before they'll re-frame, to be sure it's still in pristine conditions.
my framer years ago damaged a print, at the time we agreed he'd re-pay me for a replacement that I would search and buy myself, and then he'd file a claim with his insurance and get the money back.

What should I do if my framer damaged my art?, by heller on May 19, 2017 22:22:23 GMT 1, I would make sure they DID NOT dry mount your print.
Do not let any frame shop dry mount any work, it removes the value from the print instantly.
They should refund you at current market value and will have to file a loss claim with their insurance, unless they had you sign a wavier of liability when you dropped off the artwork releasing them of liability.

What should I do if my framer damaged my art?, by Sturban Has Saggy Tits on May 19, 2017 22:40:38 GMT 1, Bloody donkeys! I wouldn't have thought they would have dry mounted it if they have used a mount, there is no reason to. I would no way let them attempt to float it now though. Get your print back and get the f@ck out of there. A little tip, never take a print to be framed where they advertise framing medals and football shirts

I have a feeling Gary has a lucrative footie shirt framing sideline!

What should I do if my framer damaged my art?, by jhspaybar on May 20, 2017 3:19:23 GMT 1, Thanks for the advice everyone, I went back today and had them cut open the back of the frame. It was not dry mounted, the new clerk did apparently just misspeak, whew! The work was very high quality and it really was framed well to archival standards, just without a float. I talked to the framer directly and left it there to get fixed since they did come recommended and just made an honest mistake which didn't cause damage.
