Keith Haring - The Story of Red and Blue, by ca on May 25, 2017 16:35:03 GMT 1, Hi,
Looking for someone to clarify if the prints in the "The Story of Red and Blue" set were signed by the artist or by the estate? Some galleries tend to say it was signed by Keith Haring but another one recently told me that it was not. Not sure who to believe.
Anyone knowledgeable about the subject?
Thanks!

Keith Haring - The Story of Red and Blue, by daveart on May 25, 2017 17:27:17 GMT 1, if you are considering buying get pictures of the actual piece - front and back - i think you will find that the back has a hand stamp area on it where it is stamped and then information filled in ...by the estate .. and signed by Julia Gruen. search google and look at images. wont take long to find an image of what this looks like.
KH did pass at about this time and 'MAYBE' there are some signed by him.. i dont know aobut that .. those would be highly valuable.. these ones signed by the estate are usually pretty reasonably priced.
galleries play this game with the pop shop images as well. some are signed by KH and some are signed by the estate. I periodically send notes to galleries that are listing items as signed and tell them they should update their listing to say "estate signed" i wonder how many people get taken in by this little scheme.

Keith Haring - The Story of Red and Blue, by daveart on May 25, 2017 17:30:31 GMT 1, for example.. sorry to ramble on..
here is a gallery - Joseph Fine art.. www.josephfineart.co.uk/artists/30-keith-haring/works/705/
"Stamp signed with the artist's signature and dated bottom right. Signed, numbered, dated and stamped, verso by the Keith Haring Estate"
this is total BS to confuse people. stamped signed.. ha. whatever. its estate signed and my opinion is KH did not actually touch this work. if he had there would be no reason at all for Julia Gruen to estate sign it.. and the estate signatures were only done after his death. confusing at best and fraudulent at worst.

Keith Haring - The Story of Red and Blue, by daveart on May 25, 2017 17:34:52 GMT 1, and here is paddle8's entry into the world of deceptive descriptions...
paddle8.com/work/keith-haring/63604-no-13-from-the-story-of-red-and-blue
in case the link doesnt work..
it says : "Signed and dated in pencil on recto; numbered on verso and stamped by Estate of Keith Haring "
ha ha.. what ?
it should say clearly ..."Stamped, numbered, dated, and signed on Recto (Back) by Julia Gruen executor of the Keith Haring Estate" ..
in my humble opinion..
so there you go .. check their wording.. get pictures front and back.. etc. most people that frame KH Estate prints will leave an open block in the back of the frame so you can see the estate stamp and signature ..

I periodically send notes to galleries that are listing items as signed and tell them they should update their listing to say "estate signed" i wonder how many people get taken in by this little scheme. I'll have to agree the KH Estate has been at best extremely deceptive if not border line fraudulent with some of their editions. I saw one editioned set just a few weeks ago that was framed and up at an actual museum shop. Each was signed and dated by KH in the corner of the print which was surprising to me. I was standing there for a few minutes getting the light at every angle and could actually see the signature which appeared to be in pencil was even overlapping the print in some areas and had different reflective properties as pencil lead would. I was thinking these absolutely have to be signed unless they were forged. I mean who would go to the trouble to print the signature with a separate layer that appeared to be pencil lead, definitely not his Estate. But after a stumped salesperson and a baffled manager looked into it for me it was discovered they were all printed. The sales notes is that they were signed with COA but the actual print paperwork says estate signed, which is actually on the back. IMO purposely deceptive. How can they be ok with printing backdated signatures like that and giving sales notes that it is "signed"? Horrible.

Keith Haring - The Story of Red and Blue, by ca on May 25, 2017 18:58:56 GMT 1, Dear god, this is worst than i thought, thanks for the input, well appreciated, will ask for pictures and all. In other news, the estate's website is also very useless when it comes to this, not surprising I guess considering how they approach this

I can confirm this. This edition is not signed by Keith Haring. The signature that you see on the front of the prints is printed. At the back these prints are stamped, numbered, dated and signed by the Keith Haring Estate. It is quite confusing even the Catalogue raisonnรฉ: Keith Haring - Editions On Paper 1982-1990 does not mention this.

Keith Haring - The Story of Red and Blue, by Smokeidaeye on Jun 20, 2024 0:03:34 GMT 1, Very interesting. I was looking at a couple of these and almost every source claims that they are signed in pencil on the front. Glad to see this before I pulled the trigger.
