Forum Auctions โข Banksy Marketplace ๐ฌ๐ง, by Daniel Silk on Oct 14, 2022 11:21:16 GMT 1, We have seen many auction houses have Banksy only auctions in recent years, I was just wondering if it's common for auctions dedicated to just on artist? I think we have seen Warhol and Haring auctions, but has anyone done a Damien Hirst auction recently? Or Kaws?

Forum Auctions โข Banksy Marketplace ๐ฌ๐ง, by Deleted on Nov 9, 2022 6:45:54 GMT 1, Pretty much as expected in the current climate. I think it's time the auctions/dealers who make a living off the artist and have done very well of it over the years shoulder some responsibility in managing the market, we've done a woeful job as a collective so far, very short term view to a market that will exist forever. And that goes for the current PC, the artists 'parent/legal guardian' as well in regards to leadership and managing the artists market. Practically non existent.

Forum Auctions โข Banksy Marketplace ๐ฌ๐ง, by Charlie Bronson on Jan 31, 2023 19:08:32 GMT 1, You need to take into account the condition of these pieces. As far as I am aware, they were not in mint condition by any stretch, Valid point, although during the height of the market a year or so ago, condition wasnโt an issue, to my surprise. Pieces that were not mint were getting equal amounts of money to pieces that were, at auction houses. Sounds ridiculous, but I clearly remember being shocked at the fact that it was happening, and it was discussed on this forum. Seems like that may have changed as the market has cooled down.

i think when it was bubbled and had a lot more demand than supply people new into it had FOMO and would happily just buy the name, framed, dry mounted, creased it didn't matter as long as they had bought into the market before they were priced out.
Then supply outstripped demand over a year or so of people and auction houses cashing in
My forecast is 5 years doom and gloom getting continually colder, followed by a little sunshine, then scorchio in year 8
Shame his stuff went mad price wise, odd this arty market, i liked it much more when an unsigned was ยฃ1.5k and a signed at ยฃ3k, was a lot more fun
prints for ยฃ30k-ยฃ100k + is just mental regardless of it being from any artist

Forum Auctions โข Banksy Marketplace ๐ฌ๐ง, by JFCC on Jan 31, 2023 19:35:38 GMT 1, The Forum Auction today clearly had a desperate seller or two realising their "investment" as some of the prices accepted made no sense at all as they were, in many cases, below bottom of the range. I am led to believe that this was due to there being virtually no bidders.
In my opinion no sensible seller in this market would sell at these prices or using this auction house unless they were desperate as Forum are rumoured to do deals on sellers premium (0%) and allegedly sharing some of the buyers premium. If you have a ยฃ50k-250k print get it to Sotheby's, Christies or Phillips as they have the pull.
The real shocks for me were NBG, Christ with Shopping bags and Choose Your Weapon (pink). The others sold items were low but not shockingly so, representing more a function of no bid competition.
Of the 3 noted above there has been a very poor conditioned Christ With Shopping Bags and CYW floating round the market but even so CWSB which peaked at ยฃ160k and CYW well over ยฃ200k at ยฃ74k and ยฃ94k respectively they are bargains. Well done to the buyers. I would though be interested if anybody has inspected them or got the condition reports, which in fairness to Forum are usually very accurate and reliable.
As a reminder to get what the buyer pays, it's the hammer price plus an average of 34.5% to cover ARR, buyers premium and VAT on buyers premium.
Crazy days indeed...add Forum to Bonhams on the list of places to buy Banksy...but don't tell anyone!!

Forum Auctions โข Banksy Marketplace ๐ฌ๐ง, by JFCC on Jan 31, 2023 19:50:56 GMT 1, Sadly many of us have been round this block before so there's nothing knew here.
The economic and investment world (and the consumer world for that matter) does not work in such long cycles, so 5 - 8 years of gloom is fairly unlikely.
More normal is a 3 year trough which is what we are in. This trough usually sees a gradual decline, a serious decline and then a slowed decline or period of neutrality. My guess is we are in the middle/peak of the trough period as supplies are drying up (as crisis sellers have already exited the market) and there are now very few buyers as cash flow is tight for speculative investment and uncertainty is at its peak.
The uptick will start in 2024 in my opinion and subject to macro factors not worsening (wars not strikes) the global art market will gain momentum with positive increases leading to a bull market in 2025/26 as we have had before.
If you want to check this theory, map price increases on leading artists over the past 25 years or so and its pretty well as described. With Banksy it follows the same pattern it is just more pronounced due to shortage of supply and mass popularity and affrodabilty.

Pieces that were not mint were getting equal amounts of money to pieces that were, at auction houses. Sounds ridiculous, but I clearly remember being shocked at the fact that it was happening, and it was discussed on this forum. Seems like that may have changed as the market has cooled down. Yes the market bubbled due to COVID actually putting more money in the economy (combination of less outgoings and COVID loans etc) and so in to "investors" pockets. A mini bubble was created in the Art, Car and watch and jewellery markets in particular and so people were buying without a full understanding of what they were buying especially with regards to condition. Some shockers were sold!!!
But that said if you look at sales of Warhol, Miro, Dali and Picasso the condition is important but not critical, as the pieces have been through many hands and buyers accept imperfections (within reason) and this is how it should be. Every print cannot be expected to be perfect it's just that Banksy's work is more current day so we are being perhaps a bit over sensitive of condition!
