Just like Micallef, I think many (including myself) are holding many prints that are going to be worth almost nothing in the not so distant future.

Who can explain Micallefs market, by robo on Feb 7, 2019 9:47:51 GMT 1, Sad to see this as I'm a fan (and owner) of this artist's work, however I'd have to say that actually ยฃ300 for a 1000 edition print is not so low, and also I wonder if lack of information about the quality of the framing added some uncertainty to this auction?

Agreed. I donโt care how much theyโre worth. Judgement Day is still my favourite piece I own and always seems to get the most attention from visitors.

Who can explain Micallefs market, by artgrenade on Feb 7, 2019 12:24:23 GMT 1, Changing painting direction/style is an admirable thing to do and I applaud Micallef for that. I think his recent work is better than ever and IMHO he's the best UK painter out there. He totally nailed it with the Trump fag packets/posters and received a lot of backlash for doing that. His older prints now are reasonably priced and easy to buy and furthermore great images!
So sick and tired of artists re-hashing the same idea over and over again. Each time i see yet another variation of a balloon, butterfly, geisha girl, rainbow, young child, dripping animal/eye/lips/insects within a print I feel close to vomiting. At least he's being original with his idea's.

He's a wonderful painter and a lovely modest bloke. Love him and his work. He's in it for the long haul - and in my opinion his work will stand the test of time, and that's despite some of the overblown sales rhetoric used to sell his paintings. He's continually compared to Bacon which is lazy and technically a load of old cock. He's a stronger draughtsman for a start... I'm in the privileged position of having been able to do an exchange of work with him. Is there a 'smug as f**k' smiley icon?

His studio's actually untidier than mine - and that takes some doing. And he won't quit. He's a painter, top and bottom. Here's a portrait of the bloke from a few years back:

I then went down to Eyestorm and bought Dirty Delux and then brought it with us to Australia when we moved out here in 07 Its still on our bedroom wall, it'll likely never get sold as its just such a beautiful piece. We also met Antony down in Exeter ( I think ) at his book launch, very very genuine man ( like your good self ) and he was kind enough to do a pencil sketch of an Angel Bomber for my lad in his art book. Still have that as well... I've bought and sold pieces over the years but there's something about Antonys work, I love it and only wish I had more. Hope you're well Guy, been a long time. All the best Ian

Who can explain Micallefs market, by mandelbrot on Feb 23, 2019 12:27:40 GMT 1, back in 2007 Urban/ Street art was the next best thing to make money on Banksy had peaked then price doubling every few months, lots of people introduced to Banksy being cool it and the galleries started pumping a few other guys such as namely Adam Neate and Micallef. Micallef had already released some prints 21CL, Dirty Delux with Eyestorm art, and they stated getting mopped up for quite serious money Laz had also released a few prints along with POW, and seeing as Micallef and banksy were from the same stable he had the same collector base I think around this time 21CL was around ยฃ7-ยฃ8k, laz then released 3 editions, We come in peace, Minatour weapon? and another? Editions of 50 at ยฃ5.5k each, they sold straight away and people made money on the secondary with them Then there was the release of the 4 prints at laz gallery of the peace keeper uzi girls and minatour. this was a messy queue, 100s queued, fights broke out, not very pleasant, These were ยฃ1000 each? so ยฃ4k for the set and an edition of 250? Again these were flipped and a lot of money made by sellers. then i guess it was 2009? the whole market collapsed really quickly, banksy prices halved, Micallef and Neate halved Since then banksy prices have recovered, but the other 2 have continued fallingย I think thats it? My Memory iss**t, so happy to be corrected
I'd say that's a pretty accurate explanation.. how I remember it anyway.

1. Micallefs market caught because if a sale of a judgement day on this forum for 2k, that then led to wcip etc. selling out at laz
2. His market collapsed as a direct result of the laz release of the 4 prints peacekeeper etc, poor images, high prices, no secondary, it all imploded.

The interesting point you have made for me is that this forum was the Micallef market, 10 years on has much changed?

Who can explain Micallefs market, by Gentle Mental on Feb 23, 2019 17:08:16 GMT 1, GIWTBB was an ed of 1000 - and it sold out - POW actually mentioned it as a blatant attempt to "flood" the market - that too gave Laz the indication that it's possible to really stretch it...
Prints after the Laz flood were, though beautiful, disturbing and way less wall (or family) friendly...
