Who can explain Micallefs market, by Deleted on Jul 13, 2017 20:21:54 GMT 1, LA was Micallef's 'Beautiful Inside My Head Forever'. The moment that felt good at the time but marked the high water mark from which it all receded.
Micallef is a very talented artist(though I prefer older work to the thick impasto works he is doing now). However, in this world that is not enough. There are a million Chinese who can paint as well as any artist on this forum. That doesn't mean their work is worth a thing.
But, prior to LA and the infamous print drop around the same time, Micallef was very hot amongst a very narrow group. The LA show was supposed to replicate the Banksy LA moment, and Laz pushed prices way, way, way, way beyond what they should have been. I'm talking tens of thousands, some a couple of hundred thousand. In retrospect(and at the time) it was absolutely ridiculous.
So, you have a young artist of great talent, whose prices have now risen to a level where there is just no support. His top-end work goes stone cold.
On the low end, the release of a 1000 edition print killed the print-flipping market, the hype, the talk, the lust, the desire. Micallef's prints go from selling for up to $15k(for the quite excellent '21st Century Love') and lust for 'Girl in Red Dress' to stone cold.
He hasn't recovered. Probably won't recover. The art world is littered with formerly hot painters that now teach art history, or do graphic design on the side.
That being said, damn is he fantastic. I absolutely love his mid-to-late 2000's work. Hoping for a large, well-printed coffee table book one day.

Urban/ Street art was the next best thing to make money on
Banksy had peaked then price doubling every few months, lots of people introduced to Banksy being cool it and the galleries started pumping a few other guys such as namely Adam Neate and Micallef.
Micallef had already released some prints 21CL, Dirty Delux with Eyestorm art, and they stated getting mopped up for quite serious money
Laz had also released a few prints along with POW, and seeing as Micallef and banksy were from the same stable he had the same collector base
I think around this time 21CL was around ยฃ7-ยฃ8k, laz then released 3 editions, We come in peace, Minatour weapon? and another? Editions of 50 at ยฃ5.5k each, they sold straight away and people made money on the secondary with them
Then there was the release of the 4 prints at laz gallery of the peace keeper uzi girls and minatour. this was a messy queue, 100s queued, fights broke out, not very pleasant, These were ยฃ1000 each? so ยฃ4k for the set and an edition of 250?
Again these were flipped and a lot of money made by sellers.
then i guess it was 2009? the whole market collapsed really quickly, banksy prices halved, Micallef and Neate halved
Since then banksy prices have recovered, but the other 2 have continued falling
I think thats it? My Memory is shit, so happy to be corrected

Who can explain Micallefs market, by Deleted on Jul 13, 2017 20:41:45 GMT 1, mose Can you please post on this forum more often. Thanks HB Thanks. That's much appreciated. I used to post a lot back-in-the-day, some of it halfway decent, some I look back at and recognize as ignorant blather. But, it was fun. The early forum days, from eBay Banksy to thegiant.org(which I used to moderate) to the darkside, were all a great learning experience.
Then, kids. Lol. Changes a lot of things.
Side note, whenever I think of the talent of Micallef, I also think of Chris Kettle. He would get a few mentions on the forums in the past but never really caught on. His painting skills are jaw-dropping. If I remember correctly, Micallef himself said, "No one paints metal like Christ Kettle." Check him out.

Love the way Chris Kettle paints. I first came across his work when he shared a studio in Farm road, Brighton, with Dan Baldwin. I was dropping of a Vespa scooter for Baldwin to paint and saw Chris's work, he's a technical genius. I recently saw his work again last year when I went to the charity auction, organised by Naked eye gallery, for the benefit of Simon Dixon, who has since sadly passed away. I was chasing the small canvas Antony Micallef had donated and saw an amazing little Kettle oil sell for ยฃ350?! Such a bargain! I love Antony's work and have two small originals on my walls right in front of me now. I think his Star has a long way to go and will shine extremely brightly in the future. For me his recent memorable moments have been Raw Intent in HK and his Trump Marlboro cigarette packets. Heres a link to the canvas I was outbid on, I should have gone higher: Micallef 'Dixon'

Tis true, especially when people like Paul Moorhouse are writing essays about your work. See my reply at the bottom of page one for a nice little cheeky image of a small Micallef canvas, very loose and quickly painted.

Who can explain Micallefs market, by mouser on Jul 13, 2017 22:35:26 GMT 1, I have a few of his head studies and some of the more recognisable pieces on the wall, love em all. To put things in context from 10 years ago, i swapped a " save my soul" and ยฃ500 for a banksy rude copper a couple days before my wedding. The eyestorm prints are still lovely pieces.
Agree with Dan that a lot of his work is a bit dark, still trying to work out where to hang a black siren withour mentally scarring the kids. But one day it'll hit the wall.

I have most of the eyestorm prints - 21st CL and Tokyo girl on my walls now - and l enjoy them everyday

Who can explain Micallefs market, by Deleted on Jul 14, 2017 0:22:09 GMT 1, I guess there is no guarantee that prices will continue to rise in todays contemporary art world.
I thought these articles worth a read.
" Micallef was little-known at the time, but his work is now exhibited around the world, including at Tate Britain in London. From next month one of his sculptures will be on show at the Royal Academy in London.
Actors Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Jude Law and Robin Williams as well as artist Damien Hirst are among the celebrities who own Micallef's work. Some of his pieces sell for more than ยฃ100,000.
Kevin, 52, who was advised to buy the painting at the Affordable Art Fair in London by a former employee who is a fine arts graduate, says: 'We really liked the piece. We wanted something bright and uplifting for our office. We weren't really thinking of it as an investment and I had not heard of Micallef."

"This is art as calculated strategy like career planning with a guidance counselor in high school. What will my latest series be made of? What technique? Then I will attach an ex post facto conceptual conceit to it and boom; I am flirting with flippers. Its eco(nomics)-art, predicated on an easily repeatable and palatable formula. Alas, it was to be nothing more than another version of the romantic and mythical story of the rock prodigy who dies too early (usually at age 27) from an overdose of fill-in-the-blank; so too is ZF dead on arrival from indulgence in materialism and shallowness, more than anything else.

Flipping and the Rise of Zombie Formalism
www.artspace.com/magazine/contributors/see_here/the_rise_of_zombie_formalism-52184
Modern Art Future Garbage by Poly Ethylene
"High value Modern Art (Official Modern Art) is the creation of a โSystemโ a clever exercise by dealers, critics and curators designed to con rich buyers who feel they must cover the walls of their mansions with fashionably painted investments."

Who can explain Micallefs market, by .dappy on Jul 14, 2017 0:32:44 GMT 1, ... I was right then
... he is coming back strong and using modern platforms to spread his work, ie see his insta page...
... he has not released a print in ages and therefore you either recognise his older prints or have never been exposed to them ... his originals are out of this world both creatively and price wise ...
... I think and hope that he does return (not saying that he has disappeared)
... I do own one or two micallef prints but I always come back to one of his later smaller pieces 'A Small Print Of What I Think Love Looks Like' ... look it up ... full screen and stare at it ... enjoy

Who can explain Micallefs market, by d.r. perseus on Jul 14, 2017 6:33:08 GMT 1, From a post bubble perspective in terms of I didn't know who he was until the last couple years, I find the newer work he posts on his Instagram amazing and way more compelling than his print cv. It's actually hard for me to connect the two periods. There is something more refined and thoughtful, vibrant...in his newer work. I would not attribute that to hype but posts in this thread suggest a type of fervor that was driven more by secondary markets than quality of work in the past. Regardless those same posts suggest his work is WAY out of my pay grade.
