Other Criteria, Store Closure, by thisisit on Jul 19, 2017 14:41:29 GMT 1, Yeah he's not wise at all ...... only worth $300m and walks into HM show and takes two big OG's without even asking the price...... there's you boys scrapping over an invader print calling DH 'not wise' - lollllllll !!!!! Think bigger picture. He's degraded his "brand" and exclusivity. In a 100 years he'll be nothing but a footnote in art history books. He's the Donald Trump of the art world. Great businessman but his appeal has an expiration date. I would never buy a Hirst nor would I cherish one simply knowing there are so many. Money is fleeting, legacy is forever. Okay, I disagree on many levels, lets start: There might be thousands of diamond skull prints, but some of Damien Hirsts popular subject matter has not been extensively mass produced. Look at psalms, and sculpture pills.
I cant argue that he will be more than a foot note. thats enough. What of the artists discussed here daily will even be a footnote? pejac? ha!
and if money is fleeting and legacy is forever, at least Damien Hirst has something left

Other Criteria, Store Closure, by Viking Surfer on Jul 19, 2017 15:40:41 GMT 1, With Damien Hirst, I think the point being made is that his prints were at one stage, the creme de la creme, to own one was pretty exclusive.
He never took his foot off the break though and churned out an awful lot of them, never really stopping. A lot of prints came in every variation imaginable, Acrylic spot on canvas, acrylic spot on paper, woodcut spot, serigraph spot, giclee spot, linocut spot, spray spot, spot on a poster, spot on a skate deck, spot on a t-shirt, spot on a tote bag (not even joking - look at other criteria's website).
Not only that, many works come in a supreme amount of colour / size variations.
Now almost anyone can get some variation of his most popular works in some shape or form. He releases new work constantly that are large in edition size and at high price points. I think a lot of his work now goes unsold, where at one stage it was snapped up.
He definitely has his place in art history, he's had a very successful career and has made an awful lot of money, I also really enjoy the themes behind many of his great works. There is no denying his talent.
From a collecting standpoint though do his artworks justify their current price points? Will he continue to remain popular or is he on a scale of decline? Does he even really give a s**t?

Other Criteria, Store Closure, by avec art on Jul 19, 2017 16:04:02 GMT 1, Isn't a lot of the pricing kept artificially inflated by his team and people with heavily invested interests. I went to his spectacular show Beautiful Inside my Mind at Sothebys in 2008 as financial markets plunged. I've heard since, that although it famously 'sold out' netting a cool ยฃ111 million squid, that much of it was bought by Hirst himself or hedge funds which he has a stake in.

That's the way of the art world - and scaled according to market. Oh so familiar ....

Other Criteria, Store Closure, by Jeezuz Jones Snr on Jul 20, 2017 10:46:06 GMT 1, The millions of prints he has sold have paid for his bacons!!
"I have five Bacons now. They'll end up in the Manor [Hirst's country estate in Toddington]. I have one on the wall by the TV. I watch it more than I watch the TV. You can't not look at it. It demands your attention, pulls you in. It's just unbelievable to me that I own them."
