They were, latterly, pretty dreadful but this is very sad news. I think that he struggled for a long time with depression and issues with drugs and alcohol. He also spoke in the past about a previous desire to commit suicide as a child. Despite what you might think of his music, he had an undeniably recognisable, unique and talented voice.
