Seeing lots of SOLD on the PDF now, most of the smaller priced stuff is selling out. Congrats to Martin and the gallery, looks to be going well so far.

Was a little surprised to see things sold before the buyers preview went out. Really loving the "levitating" and the other dancer image. Pity those sold before the preview went out.
$1,250 seems like a pretty good price for an original considering the cost of some of his prints.

Revive new show from Martin Whatson..., by touchdowntodd on Sept 27, 2017 13:27:05 GMT 1, $350 for a print with no hand embellishment, which is the 1 and only trick this pony has... easy pass
I'm not sure why people are calling prices good. Look at the pdf.. they're basically charging regular resell on the same old images. Slightly bigger canvases are the only thing close to a decent deal. But $1250 for a 1x1'? I feel I've turned them down at that and so has everyone here
I'm a fan, but hard to even pay retail when it's the same imagery, same embellishment every time. No growth. Also you can buy pieces cheaper just by contacting him lol. Funny that people could get excited over a $350 screen print, when weeks ago the Snik Collab was much bigger, hand embellished, and less than twice that
Idk .... perhaps the gallery and friends just make screen names to hype. I personally know 10+ people that were going, and offered early access. . But canceled orders or declined to purchase.. 1x1 canvases are just. ....... idk

Revive new show from Martin Whatson..., by NYart on Sept 27, 2017 16:50:08 GMT 1, Agreed Iโd like a nice original Whatson but over 1k for a 30x30 is pretty crazy. I understand compared to market price on his prints itโs justifiable but thatโs a small canvas for a large amount of money.

Revive new show from Martin Whatson..., by greedy21 on Sept 27, 2017 17:11:09 GMT 1, I don't follow or keep up to date on his OG work pricing/sales but I do think the 100x50 size canvases listed at $3k are a good price point. Again, nothing to base that opinion on aside from personal judgement.
I do also wish the prints had some HF.

Those come out at .60 a sq cm opposed to .72 for the 30x30s so definitely a better value

The small butterfly OG for 1750 on canvas seems like it would be a great option for someone who likes this image.
If you include the framing cost you're probably looking at 1500 for an original which really isn't bad at all. Especially when someone is trying to flip an edition of 35 at over 1k already.

Revive new show from Martin Whatson..., by Art Fan 2011 on Sept 27, 2017 18:30:24 GMT 1, Alot of his prints go for more than 1k, and hand finished one`s nearer 2k, so a hand painted canvas for 1k seem a "fair price" - sure his work is a bit "samey" but that can be said for many artists these days. If it keep`s selling, Martin will keep painting!

Revive new show from Martin Whatson..., by Deleted on Sept 30, 2017 21:35:40 GMT 1, I'm still very much not 'getting' Whatson. He seemed like a nice lad when he did shows in London. But that aside, what's this stuff all about? This faux tagging mushed up stuff just looks cluttered to me and lacking purpose.
For example let's look at the dancer image, while nice enough, what's it saying artistically? I'm intrigued why people want these images on their walls, and particularly members of an urban art forum. Yet that could probably apply to many other more mainstream artists that seem popular on here at the moment. Maybe this type of inoffensive stuff has a place in the scene but I'm still not sure why it creates such interest. Maybe Whatson fans could shed light on this?

Dancer is probably the one image that I like by him. That being said, wall friendly images don't need to have a meaning IMO. Sometimes it's just nice to have something wall friendly that pops. I would have no inclination to own multiple Whatsons, but I still would like one. Plenty of artists out there who have great images that don't have some deep meaning. While I agree I don't get the massive hype behind Whatson, his OG's are still reasonably priced, his style is consistent, and he knows his market. You can make the same argument for vast majority of artists. I can assure you, that when I have people over, they're usually mostly drawn to images that are vibrant over images that have to be explained.

Interesting points of view and not everyone wants more challenging work on their walls.
While many great artists have images that may be without meaning, I'd say that's okay as their technique will shine through. I'm not sure though anyone could really call Whatson a great artist. What I see in his work is him alluding to being an urban artist via a type of tagging but lacking any meaningful connection to what that should represent. That leaves a problem that the buyer is neither buying genuinely high quality art nor are they buying into an artist with a strong street pedigree. That's why it's strange to me that this work a few years on still has so much popularity on an urban art forum.
It will be interesting to see if Whatson can maintain his rise in popularity and how far this body of work can go.

Revive new show from Martin Whatson..., by greedy21 on Sept 30, 2017 22:25:00 GMT 1, I don't think MW is aiming to be or has produced any thought provoking peices with hidden messages etc. I too, find his art to be eye pleasing and enjoyable and that alone can be enough for me at times. Many artists I follow and collect are quite the opposite.
I understand when people say his work is repetitive and I wouldn't want my walls decorated with multiple pcs either. There's many current, successful artists who fall under this same umbrella, IMO.
I was lucky enough to grab the 100x50cm canvas I wanted from this show, there was actually quite a few that I would've chosen from. I am looking forward to receiving and displaying it.

Revive new show from Martin Whatson..., by nobokov on Sept 30, 2017 23:09:14 GMT 1, I think 'beauty' seems to be underrated these days. I think that if you get beauty (as if there's anything to get), that's all you need to understand about Whatson. Absolutely love Dancer, Levitate, Equilibrium, and the SNIK Collabs and a proud owner of two of those.
Was the opening very busy at all? The instagram pics seem to show that it was less popular than the Dface opening.
