What if..........Banksy had never happened, by Everyone Owes on Sept 2, 2017 19:52:03 GMT 1, Where would this scene be, had Mr B never blown up, or occurred? Would the likes of Faile, Fairey, Eine be where they are today (*Brainwash, we could have done without for sure.) Would another scene have taken it's place, maybe driven by the YBAs? Would it be much more bespoke, less driven by derivative styles? Or is that a good thing? Are more people now aware of 'art' as a result? I enjoy it regardless but sometimes I do wonder what might have been..... anyone else?

I don't know about the others, given their strong connection with POW & Laz, but I think highly likely that Fairey would have had the same path. His peers are less Banksy & company and more Kaws and Barry McGee, as they are the three American giants to rise from the 1990's scenes(Faile was established in 1999, but their development was most definitely 2000's. In contrast, Fairey's stickers had already been going worldwide for 10 years before Faile even existed).
I think of a bizarro world where Banksy and co. didn't happen, and in that fever dream Dan Colen, Dash Snow(still alive), Nate Lowman, Ryan McGinley, Terence Koh, Banks Violette, etc. are far more pop cultural forces then they ended up being. Where post 9-11 NYC dominates.

If Banksy never happened I think Shepard or Barry would have dictated general directions and street art and graffiti would have equal artists to aspire to be. I think street art would have continued to grow and a normal level much like graffiti had been, but the explosion would not have happened and graffiti would not have been left so far behind. Which brings us to today, street art has been declining fast because this Bubble the quality hase been garbage for some time and graffiti artists have slowly been making ground on the market and they are the real avant garde right now. IMO

What if..........Banksy had never happened, by Harveyn on Sept 2, 2017 21:13:36 GMT 1, This scene started way before Banksy and will continue long after. Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat are just a few of the pioneers. That said Banksy has given the whole scene a second wind with a capital B.
I certainly believe that if Banksy did not exist that others like KAWS, Barry McGee, Shepard Fairey, OS Gemeos, Swoon, Futura, Faile and many more would have pushed this scene forward.
So much talent and so much energy. Its why it remains so fresh, current and captivating IMO.
I have always had a broad love of art across so many genre's from Turner, Da Vinci, Van Gogh to Hirst, Bacon, Freud, Adrian Ghenie, Jenny Saville and George Condo to name but a few. But without doubt this scene excites and invigorates me more than any other.

What if..........Banksy had never happened, by Cookiemonster on Sept 2, 2017 21:19:56 GMT 1, If Banksy never happened then none of us would be here, we wouldn't be sitting in front of our computers on a Saturday responding to another hypothetical scenario!!
Nor was it Basquiat or Haring, that drove the street art scene, more credit should be given Fab 5 Freddy, Rammellzee, Martha Cooper, Rock Steady Crew and few others. In the modern era though Mr B has been the acceptable brand that brought it from the streets, to a civilised artform

What if..........Banksy had never happened, by chevyav53 on Sept 2, 2017 21:56:19 GMT 1, I can't believe people are arguing about something that never happened. Quality threads are getting hard to find nowadays. Its like the Oozlum bird that flies in ever decreasing circles until it disappears up its own bum. I agree, starting a flat earth thread to improve on quality. Who's in?

If anyone says they still would be - then they are living in a different universe. Look at when you HarveyN joined this forum. When did you join the Obey forum or are you a member? Banksy was and still is the draw. Disagree as much as you like, but I am right

You're wrong mate, as far as I'm concerned. I joined way after the old forum turned into this one and came into it following and interested in other artists particularly Faile in my case.

What if..........Banksy had never happened, by sugar72 on Sept 2, 2017 22:19:30 GMT 1, Continues to amaze me, these amazingly broad sweeping inane generalisations about art, a subject that is so subjective that to make such comments ( for me !) only means that those certain people have a vested interest in that particular artist and that interest being monetary and investment based.

I joined the Obey forum in 2008 just about 6 months after this one but I joint Wallkandy before this forum. I joined this forum and Wallkandy because of Dface and Micallef and had not even heard of Banksy. So I know for a FACT I would have sought likeminded people on other platforms if this forum had not existed.
Now have you done telling me why I think and act like I do.

What if..........Banksy had never happened, by The Rat King on Sept 3, 2017 9:15:21 GMT 1, Banksy has directly introduced me to a wealth of other art and artists and so much more take dismaland for example. His work opened the door for me and I don't know if I would have discovered so much without him . He has smashed it out the park From day one ; in my eyes he is a god . Just a shame the price of his work has also gone into a different stratosphere !

What if..........Banksy had never happened, by Cookiemonster on Sept 3, 2017 13:09:56 GMT 1, no need for apologies, your opinion differs to mine and thats no bad thing. My point is, if Banksy didn't exist, as was the question raised by the op, how would the urban art scene be seen. Irrespective to whoevers name was mentioned as champions of the scene, none of them brought the community/scene together as quickly and as cohesively as Banksy, and that view extends to include this and many other forums.
However I accept that the the street art scene was alive pre Banksy, but the urban art world would that still have existed? maybe, but not as the art movement it is today.

A flat earth thread would be like another Marilyngrenaderainbow print. See, I disagree with the premise of these posts that this represents a bad thread.
This thread is a hypothetical, of course, but it does address a core issue in, well, a novel way. That issue is the extent of Banksy's influence in the art world. Is 'urban art' a loose genre whose time had come, or was it the case of Banksy's rising tide lifting all, even unseaworthy, boats?
To me, it also highlights a bit of a split between US and UK urban art scenes while also revealing that many members gravitated to forums like this, not because of Banksy, but via other art exposure.
To me, all this is quality and the type of thing I like to see continue.

What if..........Banksy had never happened, by Vroom & Varossieau on Sept 27, 2017 9:12:59 GMT 1, Don't forget about Dondi White, Kenny Sharf, SEEN, Lee Quinones, and Haring and Richard Hambleton! All these artists were all ready in collections of really big collectors in the early 80's In fact there's still a long road to go for Banksy to even get the eyeballs of such collectors. For example Richard Hambleton is one of those real godfathers of the street art scene. Watch him..
