What if..........Banksy had never happened, by Hairbland on Sept 27, 2017 11:06:53 GMT 1, no need for apologies, your opinion differs to mine and thats no bad thing. My point is, if Banksy didn't exist, as was the question raised by the op, how would the urban art scene be seen. Irrespective to whoevers name was mentioned as champions of the scene, none of them brought the community/scene together as quickly and as cohesively as Banksy, and that view extends to include this and many other forums. However I accept that the the street art scene was alive pre Banksy, but the urban art world would that still have existed? maybe, but not as the art movement it is today.
Yawn....

What if..........Banksy had never happened, by moron on Sept 28, 2017 15:28:39 GMT 1, What if Banksy had never happened, or what if Banksy's art had never happened?
It's all about marketing as Saatchi proved with Hirst and Emin.
Banksy did not create an art movement in my view. He/him/them created an interest in urban art and promoted it to the mainstream art buyers and helped quite a few artists earn a living from it.

What if..........Banksy had never happened, by moron on Sept 28, 2017 16:20:03 GMT 1, Many years before Banksy and Invader there was Fekner and there was Blek in France..
Given the choice of owning buying an original or print by Fekner or Banksy. I would choose Fekner. I think regarding Urban art street art. Fekner is more important than Banksy in the long run.

John Fekner is a street and multimedia artist, who created hundreds of environmental, social, political and conceptual works consisting of stenciled words, symbols, dates and icons spray painted outdoors in the United States, Sweden, Canada, England and Germany.

What if..........Banksy had never happened, by wisky on Oct 9, 2017 9:16:55 GMT 1, A flat earth thread would be like another Marilyngrenaderainbow print. Looks like Joe Webb has already provided us with a thread icon, with his 'Flat Earth' print: .......Have just pulled the trigger on a Joe Webb original - One day the sun will kill us all - from Jealous Gallery after hearing some serious whispers about this artist, he is represented by Jealous, Hang up and Saatchi galleries and is still reasonably priced.....

What if..........Banksy had never happened, by Daniel Silk on Oct 9, 2017 9:39:58 GMT 1, I don't think Banksy not existing would have really made much difference in the long run. I feel another Artists would have just taken the position Banksy currently has, and maybe even that style of art would have been better for the scene? Banksy has his limitations with being anonymous, and lack of releases in recent years, while other artists could have been in the public eye more and their art more affordable and accessible than Banksy's.

One of the cheapest artist prints I own and one of my favourites.

I have just purchased an original 1/3 called 'One day the sun will kill us all', which is the Pac-man sun eating the planets.....
I would like to start a new Joe Webb page, but not sure how?

If Banksy did not exist the void would of been filled by Otis or Bambi or even Ploppi On a serious note tho if Banksy amounted to nada i would not be able to drive my DB9.

And while people are jumping up and down about Blek was before Banksy (something that Robert, sorry Robin oops Banksy) happily admitted on his website you should also consider Fekner's 'Invader' piece from the 80s
He definitely needs more recognition than he currently gets.

I love Joe Webb's work. One of the cheapest artist prints I own and one of my favourites. I agree, vikingsurfer. I paid £40, at the Folkestone ACBF and I love it. I'm desperate to frame it but been struggling to find an off the peg 30cm x 30cm frame. Joe told me that the Saatchi gallery sell them, so I'll check that out. I love his work, easy on the eye, full of humour but you don't have to scratch the surface much to find a deeper meaning.

What if..........Banksy had never happened, by vater on Nov 8, 2017 23:20:30 GMT 1, To put it simples, Mr B is the first and(controversial but not really comment) only 'urban' artist to go mainstream- as a pretty ordinary Joe Public sort of guy I'd never heard of pretty much all the regular headline artists espoused on this forum. Ignorant? Probably not, just realistic. Yep, Basquat sells for billions. He has an exhibition at the Barbican. It's not a sell out queue for hours Banksy thing.
A big part of Banksy's appeal is his humour- he clearly doesn't take himself seriously and people buy into that. His images are instantly understandable. Hence his popularity.
