Bitcoin, by Deleted on Dec 18, 2018 20:25:34 GMT 1, Isn't trading crypto arbitrage having skin in game? I understand full well. And gold is just a shiny rock. So what you can hold a shiny rock in your hand? I can print my code out and hold it in my hand if I want. And I fully accept gold is a store of value. I own gold. But I also accept it's value is based on what the next man is willing to pay for it. Bitcoin is also finite, there will only ever be 21 million. That's fine, you don't have to invest or trade it. But I prefer skin in the game rather than just talk from a nobody on a forum. By the very nature of arbitrage... no.

Bitcoin, by gd79 on Dec 18, 2018 20:30:37 GMT 1, Gold is more ductile than any other material. One ounce can be stretched into a wire five miles long. So there you have an easy test - stretch it out and see how long the wire is And bitcoin cannot be faked, but it can certainly be hacked. And you could easily set up fake wallets/ sites/ apps that can make someone think they have received something they haven't. I'm not anti bitcoin btw. But I do have one big conceptual problem. Gold is a 'technology' that is forever unchanged. It is an element. Bitcoin is premised on technology that will be outdated in a generation. What then? I'm sure it can be updated if there is enough vested interested, but will there be the appetite?
Actually Bitcoin cannot be hacked (not with today's computing power anyway). The exchanges can, but then you shouldn't leave bitcoin on an exchange.
Fair question. Bitcoin can be and is updated all the time. Any developer can submit changes, but as nobody controls bitcoin there has to be consensus about what is the actual latest version. Not sure if I've explained that well, but yes it can be updated. However, the biggest risk to bitcoin to me is that a much better crytocurrency is launched. I'm sure some that have already launched are actually better, but they don't have the network effect that bitcoin does.
Yep that's kind of what I meant. As technology advances you find yourself backing the wrong horse. Creative destruction and all.
And agreed, bitcoin cannot be hacked but that's little comfort to the many that have lost coins to hackers. Or just lost them.

That's a risk with any investment though. Stocks could (and probably will) crash soon. Gold could well crash (it's not done much in the last 8 years or so anyway).
People should be more careful Anyone that doesn't secure their bitcoin properly is asking for trouble. Thiefs are always about, sure plenty of us have had real wallets stolen or credit card fraud at some point as well.

Very true. But I would imagine the vast majority of the population know roughly how to secure themselves against this. Buy a safe. Buy listed stocks. Ignore the guy that calls and promises the world for free.
What percentage of the population do you think would be able to even buy a bitcoin, let alone secure it... And of those, how many would lose the lot of they were hit by a truck? Yep, people are dumb if they don't take steps to ensure next of kin can access this stuff... But hey, I bet it happens more often than not. And creates a further security headache.
In time all these issues will get smoothed out if/when crypto can be considered mainstream. There's a long way to go though.

Indeed. It's still new, things are constantly developing.
Even I would lose mine if I got hit by a truck. There is certainly a lot of issues to iron out. There's no way my wife would be able to access my bitcoin. I'm ok with that though tbh, she'll just spend it on more handbags

Once anyone can just click a few buttons on their phone to buy all the different tokens out there, that’s when things will really get interesting.

Bitcoin, by Express Post on Dec 18, 2018 22:59:07 GMT 1, I don't think you get it. The price dropped in a day.
It is like buying art for $6k, and the price of it drops to $3.5k the next day.
Do you like the idea of losing money or something? Whatever happened to buy low, sell high? And have you actually used btc at the local in n out or costco? Because wasn't that what btc was designed for? As an alternate form of currency? Better yet, go buy some art with btc.
Naw, not going to invest in crypto. No skin in game for me. Maybe talk to the folks that got in at 6k and now it is trading at $3.5k. They have got skin in the game too.
Wait.. prices can go up AND down! What the fuck?!

Bitcoin, by Express Post on Dec 18, 2018 23:51:46 GMT 1, Trading arbitrage is different to what a boiler room does. Surely you know what the difference between the two are?
You actually invest in bitcoin.
So all I suggested was that you have a chat to people that bought btc at $6k and see if they hold the same optimism as you today, ie btc at $3.5k. Then you go, prices go up and down. WTF kind of response was that?
Gold wasn't designed for anything. It was a naturally occurring mineral. They just found the properties applicable in those items you listed. Man your arguments are starting to show your age/maturity.

As bullish as I am in crypto, there is no respectable shop in the city actually trading crypto.. arb or no arb.
Do you realise how stupid this sounds? Talk to someone who bought when price was higher than it is now. Why don't you talk to someone who bought lower? Say around $200? Oh you are
You have no skin in the game. Why do you care so much? Other than you missed out on the move all the way up...

Bitcoin, by Express Post on Dec 19, 2018 0:02:17 GMT 1, Actually I didn't. Got in $2k, out at $16k. You're just a hodler that got lucky.
Trading arbitrage is different to what a boiler room does. Surely you know what the difference between the two are? You actually invest in bitcoin. So all I suggested was that you have a chat to people that bought btc at $6k and see if they hold the same optimism as you today, ie btc at $3.5k. Then you go, prices go up and down. WTF kind of response was that?
As bullish as I am in crypto, there is no respectable shop in the city actually trading crypto.. arb or no arb.
Do you realise how stupid this sounds? Talk to someone who bought when price was higher than it is now. Why don't you talk to someone who bought lower? Say around $200? Oh you are
You have no skin in the game. Why do you care so much? Other than you missed out on the move all the way up...

Bitcoin, by Sliding on the Walls on Dec 19, 2018 0:05:25 GMT 1, Well done the pair of you. Can you stop squabbling now?
The only thing getting rekt is this thread (and forum these days)

You're right, my bad... this was a good discussion for a while. Let's keep it on topic

Bitcoin, by Express Post on Dec 19, 2018 0:09:48 GMT 1, Not as impressive as yours in terms of percentage returns, but at least I got out. Plus the arby business is doing just fine, probably have made more than you buying and holding since 2012, 6 years ago. Oh and I can actually go out spend my money right now at the supermarket? Can you do the same right now with btc?

Bitcoin, by Sub Method on Dec 19, 2018 21:00:18 GMT 1, And as expected...another rally has begun. If we can break $4200, it will show a nice sign of some recovery. People love to talk $h!t when the chips are down. Comes with the territory I guess.
