Bitcoin, by .dappy on Mar 29, 2013 17:45:40 GMT 1, At least Tulips are nice to look at ....
Enter the tulip. ''It is impossible to comprehend the tulip mania without understanding just how different tulips were from every other flower known to horticulturists in the 17th century,'' says Dash. ''The colors they exhibited were more intense and more concentrated than those of ordinary plants.'' Despite the outlandish prices commanded by rare bulbs, ordinary tulips were sold by the pound. Around 1630, however, a new type of tulip fancier appeared, lured by tales of fat profits. These ''florists,'' or professional tulip traders, sought out flower lovers and speculators alike. But if the supply of tulip buyers grew quickly, the supply of bulbs did not. The tulip was a conspirator in the supply squeeze: It takes seven years to grow one from seed. And while bulbs can produce two or three clones, or ''offsets,'' annually, the mother bulb only lasts a few years.
Bulb prices rose steadily throughout the 1630s, as ever more speculators wedged into the market. Weavers and farmers mortgaged whatever they could to raise cash to begin trading. In 1633, a farmhouse in Hoorn changed hands for three rare bulbs. By 1636 any tulip--even bulbs recently considered garbage--could be sold off, often for hundreds of guilders. A futures market for bulbs existed, and tulip traders could be found conducting their business in hundreds of Dutch taverns. Tulip mania reached its peak during the winter of 1636-37, when some bulbs were changing hands ten times in a day. The zenith came early that winter, at an auction to benefit seven orphans whose only asset was 70 fine tulips left by their father. One, a rare Violetten Admirael van Enkhuizen bulb that was about to split in two, sold for 5,200 guilders, the all-time record. All told, the flowers brought in nearly 53,000 guilders.
Soon after, the tulip market crashed utterly, spectacularly. It began in Haarlem, at a routine bulb auction when, for the first time, the greater fool refused to show up and pay. Within days, the panic had spread across the country. Despite the efforts of traders to prop up demand, the market for tulips evaporated. Flowers that had commanded 5,000 guilders a few weeks before now fetched one-hundredth that amount.

Bitcoin, by .dappy on Nov 23, 2013 13:38:01 GMT 1, There is a very good article at the back of the Times today about bitcoins. An early adopter paid 10,000 bitcojns for a pizza back in the day! Also 1/12 of all of the 'coins' are being held by one of the original people and has never been used or spent. The robbery of an electronic 'bank' for bitcoin users a month or so ago, has not been reported to the police as 'nothing' was stolen and the bank is allegedly owned and run by an 18 year old.
That is not to say that I would not have liked a draw full of them

I'm no financial wizard at all but there was an I depth report on TV a while back and all the money experts were saying that these will lose people a lot of money one day.

Why would I for instance buy a pizza via bitcoin while the pizzabakkery can make a further profit out of my bitcoin? I dont want to leave my money on the table, hence I would keep the bitcoins myself and sell them in the bitcoin trade market. And that is exactly what is happening now. Once, the bitcoin is becoming a regular payment method, the value will decrease dramatically.

Bitcoin, by alexdb on Nov 27, 2013 15:48:07 GMT 1, Yes supply and demand on the trade market for bitcoins, not as a normal payment solution. If I have bitcoins, I wouldnt buy any goods with bitcoins, I just would do trading with these coins. And the trading would be on a market where anybody else would do the trading. Similar as the gold market, although the bitcoins are not regulated at all, and the gold market in some part is regulated.
So the purpose of bitcoins is that in the end it would be a digital monetary currency. If that is the case, it would need to be regulated. Otherwise, I would set up my own webshop selling cheap products and one can buy them only with bitcoins. The bitcoins I receive I will trade further on the market and making a huge profit, while the buyer of my cheap product has just the cheap product and I earn his profit by that bitcoin. Now that would be interesting....shop owners would become traders and the shops are just byproducts.

Yes supply and demand on the trade market for bitcoins, not as a normal payment solution. So when i go to my local pub in East London and buy pizza & beers with just my iPhone & Blockchain wallet app what does that mean then? The point is as more and more people accept BTC as payment for goods the rise of it's fiat value will increase..

Can you please explain? Because the more it will be used as payment system the more it will be treated as an monetary currency, hence more or less fixed pricing.
