Don't particularly care who Banksy is and don't particularly care if he gets exposed.
He's a vandal and should get no more protection than any other graffiti artist.
He is a real person though and not a ghost so sooner rather than later he'll be exposed, that's probably already happened and has had no effect on anyone lives.

We feel we know - or indeed that in a way, we own - public figures because we think we know information about them. What people really want with Banksy is this sense of entitlement or ownership - ro be able to capture or categorize or define him in some way. To put him in a box.
In our celebriity culture we feel like we're deprived of something when denied this possibility. But all the information in the world would tell us nothing about the art. And in this culture, anonymity is the only way to allow the art to speak for itself, on its own terms, rather than becoming an extension of what we imagine we know about the artist.
Artists matter, yes - but what do we really need to know other than that the artist made the art? And even then, as your post indicates, that's primarily a commercial concern, not an artistic one. Would the Mona Lisa say more if you knew what colour boxers Leonardo was wearing when he painted her? Would it say less if it turned out to have beenmpainted by someone else?
People need to understand what it is they want, and what the wanting says about them - which is almost certainly more than it does about either the artist or the art.

1. The secrececy and anonymity of Banksy - the name - Is a huge part of his art and a major reason for the popularity. The anonymous part is THE ART. Banksy knew this and chose this. To say it doesn’t matter is a lack of understand the concept of the artist.

I think this whole 'photo' of Banksy at work is a diversion. Do you think he would seriously sit there in broad daylight smiling after years of secretive night escapades?
I give him/them more credit than this personally.

In the UK: State School - Free to all Private School - Fee paying Public School - Old private school such as Eton, Harrow, etc. Called “public schools” for long winded historical reasons (essentially because they were open to anyone). Ironically they now have a long association with the ruling classes. Hence referring to someone as a “public schoolboy” could be seen as an insult by some.
