Banksy Books โข Existencilism, Cut it Out, Banging Your Head, by Rouen Cathedral on Oct 27, 2017 13:56:08 GMT 1, Of course it matters. If Ben Eine prints a rat and makes a print then how is it a 'Banksy'? Its not. Its a Ben Eine. If Ben Eine makes the print in a collaboration with someone or others and decide to say its a collaboration under the name 'Banksy' then fine. But then don't go playing off Banksy as an 'artist'. State it for what it is?ย As for your other examples those are all fine. Cause we can find out and know what they are. If Hirst doesn't do that work fine. But I now know that and can adjust my opinion (whether good or bad).ย The toys example doesn't hold because they are toys. Not art.ย And it does matter to the art. So you are telling me that if Keith Haring actually hired someone to go into the subways and do all the subway drawings but now they are art by Keith Haring and that it doesn't affect the art or the perception of the artist. Thats insane.ย So it's OK for Hirst (whoย doesn't paint his own spots or do his own spin paintings)ย but not Banksy or Harring?
Sure itโs okay. But he should be judged accordingly. Obviously that doesnโt happen but thatโs the art world right.
But now just because Hirst does it and pulls the wool over peoples eyes we should ignore it if others do? Isnโt a major premise of banksy being against the โbig art worldโ. But now we should just accept it?
If itโs a collaboration then fine, I donโt think that would make the art any less. Personally I think it might make it more. But donโt go around touting โbanksyโ as one person who just has helpers to hold stencils.

Not sure why the insult. I thought we were having a good discussion.
My point is that itโs important to know what it is. Especially if you want to compare it and discuss among the history of art.

With Banksy we don't. We don't know if its 15 great artists collaborating. We don't know if its 1 with some helpers. We don't know if its 1 person with all the ideas or 12 collaborating on the ideas.
But you know what it can't be? It can't be all three.
Sure part of the mystery is what makes it entertaining. But if you are going to say Banksy is one of the 5 best artists of the last decade don't you think its important if its actually the other 4 in collaboration?

When Banksy hit the US (before BOTI) it was well documented that a whole team of up to 20 people were seen installing one of his larger pieces. Info regarding Banksy having a team behind him has been around for a long time now, I'm not sure why you're focusing so much on it now. It does not impact his work in my opinion.
He uses a team because what he does is illegal and he needs to do it quickly.

Banksy Books โข Existencilism, Cut it Out, Banging Your Head, by Warm Gun on Oct 27, 2017 14:16:59 GMT 1, 20 people? Which piece was that? It was the 'This will look nice when it's framed' piece on top of a low level flat roof that was in quite an exposed area (by a busy road). The local paper done an interview with the landlord who reported seeing a large group of people (up to 20) on the roof coming and going from behind a covering. It's on the BOTI thread somewhere.

The local paper done an interview with the landlord who reported seeing a large group of people (up to 20) on the roof coming and going from behind a covering. It's on the BOTI thread somewhere. My comments come from observation of members of this site. This site has the most knowledgeable and and up to date following of Banksy and the street art scene.
There is a wide range of opinions on Banksy and if its 1 person, 1 person with some helpers, 5 artists in collaboration, 5 artists in collaboration with some helpers, some bored billionaire, some billionaire mega company, etc etc...
My main point is that it can't be them all. And whichever one it is and is the truth helps inform and put the works in perspective.
The fact that it is a debate and so mysterious is surely part of the work of art. Its brilliant. But, that still doesn't mean we should ignore what it is in my opinion, especially if we want to analyze or put it in perspective with the history of art and other artists.
If you want to ignore it and just judge the art or image for what it is then fine. But to ridicule someone trying to gauge it among past and present ideas of what art or an artist is doesn't make sense to me.

In my personal opinion Banksy is one man who has a very small team of trusted helpers. His art is so distinctive and unique that it can only be over seen/approved by one individual. I suspect that Banksy acts alone in choosing his location, designing the piece and cutting the stencil. I suspect he still plays a role in applying the art to the wall himself but has a little help with that.

Banksy Books โข Existencilism, Cut it Out, Banging Your Head, by Laugh Now 10 on Oct 27, 2017 19:19:19 GMT 1, I have not ridiculed you. In my personal opinion Banksy is one man who has a very small team of trusted helpers. His art is so distinctive and unique that it can only be over seen/approvedย by one individual. I suspect that Banksy acts alone in choosing his location, designing the piece and cutting the stencil. I suspect he still plays a role in applying the art to the wall himself but has a little help with that. So where does Eine fit in? Or 3D?
Iโm sure this has been discussed many times (?) but Eine was Banksyโs printer. Eine is also allegedly responsible for many โback doorโ Banksy prints making it out into the world.

Banksy Books โข Existencilism, Cut it Out, Banging Your Head, by sleazus1slord on Oct 27, 2017 19:25:27 GMT 1, 20 people? Which piece was that? It was the 'This will look nice when it's framed' piece on top of a low level flat roof that was in quite an exposed area (by a busy road). The local paper done an interview with the landlord who reported seeing a large group of people (up to 20) on the roof coming and going from behind a covering. It's on the BOTI thread somewhere. We've all seen Exit right? The scenes that depict Brainwash's 'team' of artists, designers, sub-contracted carpenters, etc actually creating the print designs based on what MBW had tabbed pages and scribbled in art books. This team is the same one that was recruited by Gastman, Shep, and Revok for the Barely Legal show. Banksy does put a ton of trust into his inner circle, we know they had a lot of creative control in designing the B.L. show, and editing the swindle mag edition. This shows how much of the brand control and executive decisions banksy leaves in the hands of others. We also know that he has production assistants, both in the field and studio.
We've seen rudimentary sketches of b's ideas authenticated to be in his own hand, but what we haven't seen is the final stages of production that bear the result we see as the consumer. The closest association we can make is that a team formed by banksy creating a final product for MBW, based on very similar directions to the ones gives his own team. I suppose he pays very well, and issues non-disclosure agreements. Not unlike contemporary artists who have huge production teams like Koons and Hirst.
How involved is banksy in the production of his work? Your guess is as good as mine.
Should't know how the sausage is made, esp if you enjoy it's taste.

Agreed, who here thinks Michelangelo painted the whole Sistine chapel himself?
This has been going on for centuries, nothing new.

The work is quite nice visually.
As for the quote. Iโve seen some โbanksyโ sketches and having seen those this quote seems odd...
