Banksy Books • Existencilism, Cut it Out, Banging Your Head, by Love Is In The Air on Oct 2, 2017 20:03:02 GMT 1, Due to some timewasting and also perhaps me not being specific enough about some items I have the Banksy Books and the framed WCP Banksy back up for sale.
And I should have said the WCP Happy Choppers is in a lovely white frame but it was fixed to back of frame when I bought it from another Forum member so if interested ask me for pics and then only buy if you are planning to hang on your wall as it is. It is ready to go but seems some people thought they might buy it and reframe or remount which wouldn't be possible.
Big thanks to WOOF EastEndBoy13 and Catman74 for great deals and PM chat so far.
Cheers

It’s here. After many many requests. I have been tasked with sharing my thoughts on Banksys famous books!
Prepare to enjoy and make this thread the longest on the forum! As I make my way through these books again be prepared for some well thought out remarks, some not well thought out remarks, some serious, some not so serious, some fun, some not so fun but always brilliant ideas.
I will start with banging my head on the wall.
Ps. Are there different editions of these books? Seen some listed/ selling for crazy prices?

I like it. The good old transition an existing word to something catchy.
Even better when it’s your own name!
However the second image would have been better if the truck was going in the other direction. Revealing the first half of the word.
Not familiar with location. So o guess it was probably a timing thing.

What is the going rate for these traditionally? I paid $60 for the three of them off eBay.
I’ve seen some sell for like a $100 each though. Were there different editions?

Talk about banging your head against a brick wall. Totally felt like after reading this section and knowing where Banksy future became...
"you do not paint graffiti in the vain hope that one day some big fat tory will discover you and put your pictures on his wall."
Ironic huh?
"If you draw on walls in public then you are already operating on a higher level.... writing graffiti is about the most honest way you can be an artist. It takes no money to do it..."
A great argument. And this is why I will always say Banksy is his greatest when he's out writing on walls. Something more like BOTI or Banksy in Gaza. Less like Dismaland and the Walled Off.
"Graffiti ultimately wins out over proper art because it becomes part of your city. it's a tool; "I'll meet you in that pub, you know, the one opposite that wall with a picture of a monkey holding a chainsaw." I mean how much more useful can a painting be than that?"
I think this is very right on. Graffiti as a 'landmark' is very interesting and I think spot on in its possibility. Kevin Lynch in The Image of a City hits this directly on the head when discussing 'landmarks'.
landmarks, readily identifiable objects which serve as external reference points.
However, saying graffiti 'wins out' over proper art is a mistake. Proper art can be part of your city and that same tool. Its possible that 'proper art' that transcend the notion and becomes something of the city deserves even more praise. Think Indiana's sculpture in Love Park. But in terms of graffiti.... Yes, it is intriguing that something as simple as a quickly made piece of graffiti of a monkey or a rat or whatever can become a 'landmark'.

Funny how people thought it was a crime when Bambi did it to a banksy print yet say nothing about this... oh and that helicopter is about as clunky as Bambi’s astronaut!

Sure if that’s what it is. Holding a stencil and being a look out. However my interpretation of that passage is not that that’s the case. Maybe banksy is just being nice though.
But we’ve seen people call it w collaboration we’ve seen some pretty profile artists helping in banksy works. So I think it’s safe to say it’s not just a look out and a person holding a stencil.
So which is it. I don’t just think you can ignore it and say it doesn’t matter.

Why does it matter ? Ben eine used to paint rats and do the prints. Look at PINS stencils from 2010 and hes obviously been part of the team too.
You think banksy should be in the warehouse making all 25 cruxifixs himself after chopping a tree and mining metals ?
Does Damien Hirts kill and nail every butterfly to the canvas ? Does kaws carve the 60ft sculptures ? Is he in the factory pouring plastic into moulds for unlimited toys ?
All the answers are no and it makes zero difference to the art

If Ben Eine prints a rat and makes a print then how is it a 'Banksy'? Its not. Its a Ben Eine. If Ben Eine makes the print in a collaboration with someone or others and decide to say its a collaboration under the name 'Banksy' then fine. But then don't go playing off Banksy as an 'artist'. State it for what it is?
As for your other examples those are all fine. Cause we can find out and know what they are. If Hirst doesn't do that work fine. But I now know that and can adjust my opinion (whether good or bad).
The toys example doesn't hold because they are toys. Not art.
And it does matter to the art. So you are telling me that if Keith Haring actually hired someone to go into the subways and do all the subway drawings but now they are art by Keith Haring and that it doesn't affect the art or the perception of the artist. Thats insane.
