Anyone collect old maps?, by therivler1 on Nov 9, 2017 14:40:22 GMT 1, My father like old maps and has a few of them.
Over the years, we had talked about a more recent style of map from the 1500-1700s that depicted California as an island. It's been a running commentary on prevailing wisdom of the day etc...
Anyway......, he's turning 70, and I thought getting one of these would make a great present. I know they are not cheap. But other than that, I haven't the slightest idea about maps, other than doing a google search.
Hoping someone can point me in the right direction!

Map dealers tend to mark up 2-3x on what you'll pay at auction. On the flipside, you know the quality will be good and you have recourse if not. It's buyers beware at auction.
Bonhams have a maps auction very soon with some lovely stuff, though mainly UK related

I'll want one myself. So tempting. I always intended to have a 'map room' in my house, but was firmly put to veto by the wife. I have old maps (of the U.K. by John Speed), photo maps (Sohei Nishino), text maps (Stephen Walter). I'm a sucker for a map.

Got it based on all the hype thinking it was going to be something special. Laughed when I got it and sold it right away as it reminded me of the free maps at airports and hotels. |
