What are your views on Morons?, by Strange Al on Mar 29, 2007 21:38:06 GMT 1, I for one would dearly love a Sepia Morons print for my wall (preferably the much coveted No. 62, which is of course rightfully mine!). Though the forum appears divided on the image.
IMO it's conceptually the strongest print from the LA series. I can totally imagine Banksy sitting in the pub this evening and muttering "I can't believe you morons actually buy this s***". The work says so much about the current hysteria in the street art market and about Banksy wrestling with the fact he's now a part of the art establishment. The fact that the POW site melted this afternoon and level of feeling the whole buying process has generated, just make the work all the more poignant.
OK, aesthetically it's not the most pleasing of Banksy's works and a real departure form his early stencil stuff, which originally got me hooked. Though conceptually it resonates with me.
What do my fellow morons think?

What are your views on Morons?, by johnas on Mar 29, 2007 22:20:01 GMT 1, count me in - I would LOVE No. 62
I don't think the POW site melted purely because of the Morons image - it's the first Banksy release in ages and since the last, he's gained popularity due to increased press coverage and stuff like Sothebys... they all helped to increase the demand and raise awareness.
I like the Morons image although I prefer the LA version with the gold frame. I do think it still shows his humour but in a more direct way than some of his works which make you think first - the Morons image is pretty direct in it's message. I don't believe it's the strongest - i think trollies and applause are stronger in their message AND delivery

What are your views on Morons?, by Strange Al on Mar 29, 2007 22:41:40 GMT 1, I absolutely think the site would have melted whatever Banksy image POW released today (even if it had been a Banksy tea stain a la Gavin Turk). What I was trying to say is that the fact that the site melted is so indicative of the current hype, referenced in the Morons image.
There are a fair few artists currently benefiting from the banksy "street-art" halo effect; though I've heard or seen few comment on the current explosion in the scene. In contrast, Banksy's comment in the morons image is loud and in your face, which I like. There's something intriguing about the fact that I want the image, despite the fact that it's effectively a dig at me. It plays with my addiction.
I agree that some of the other Banksy images in the LA series are more subtle and, I'm guessing like you, I probably prefer trollies overall. Though conceptually morons is the stongest image for me in this climate.
Ultimately, what I'm trying to do is stimulate some debate about art rather than whinge about POW.

Amen to that. I'm taking it personally too

That's exactly the reason why I passed on it at the LA show. Of course, really regretting it now, 'cos it's really grown on me, insulting or otherwise.
When it was my turn in line, all 6 LA prints were available to me... but unfortunately, US$3000 was not So I just chose "Festival" and "Trolley Hunters". But still... knowing that it was fully available to me, and not being able to act on it just kills me!!! But I digress. Sorry about that!

What are your views on Morons?, by 7eny on Mar 30, 2007 12:03:07 GMT 1, I think those of us that like it, like it because it pokes fun at us like jjoshi44 says.
I remember watching the rats and toxic Mary on POW for ages, but now there is not the luxury of looking at the print for a while and wondering which room it will go in or even waiting for pay day, because we know at the end of the day if we don't get one as soon as it's released then our only option is ebay or failing that a gallery both of which end up ยฃยฃยฃยฃยฃ and most of us can't afford. When you add in the carpet baggers and those hoping for a longer term investment, with the hype generated from the media and galleries then the marketing wheel is fully wound and we would snap up anything that Banksy produced (especially when we know it is authentic), but I'm happy with that it's the inevitability of life , i just look forward to all the debates that happen when the Capitalism/festival print comes out ;D ;D ;D

What are your views on Morons?, by Strange Al on Mar 30, 2007 12:24:33 GMT 1, I really think that it's hilarious that Banksy can afford to take a visual swipe at the monster and it still doesn't bite back.
I'm really hoping that those who managed to get one appreciate this and like the image for its irony, rather than the fact it's a Banksy and worth a fair bit of cash.
In relation to the two versions of the image released, I think the new sepia version works better aesthetically. It adds a certain warmth lacking from the white original and the colour is better fitting to the auction room environment. IMO it looks more distinguished - fitting of an image which us morons are willing to pay through the nose for.
I very much get the feeling that banksy isn't 100% happy with the original prints released for the LA Show, hence the new version of Morons and the coloured version of trollies, which may or may not see a POW release in the future. While I think both the sepia morons and coloured trollies are an improvement on the original prints, I have some reservations about images already effectively in the market (i.e., the white LA versions) being released later in different colour versions. Eelus has received no end of stick (rightly or wrongly) regarding his prints, will Banksy get the same treatment from the forums. I doubt it.

What are your views on Morons?, by hungrig on Mar 30, 2007 14:23:07 GMT 1, Very well put, jjoschi44.
You may be right about Banksy not being completely happy with the original prints released for the LA 'Barely Legal' show. The printing by Modern Multiples was chaotic because of the time pressures and, initially, people were being told at the Preview that prints would not be released that day. This position changed in the early evening.
The prints released in LA were numbers 51-150 out of editions of 500 (Steve held back the first 50), but I understand Banksy refused to sign them at the last minute. This might indicate that the original intention was to have the first 150 signed (100 sold in LA and 50 sold in London), and numbers 151-500 as unsigned prints sold in London.
I believe it was only after Banksy refused to sign the LA releases that it was decided to have separate signed editions of 150, in addition to unsigned editions of 500. These signed editions of 150 (along with the remaining prints not printed in LA, i.e. 350 prints from each unsigned edition) would be printed by POW. There would be more time to get them just right and reach the position where Banksy would feel comfortable putting his name to them.
I too have reservations about different versions of prints, printed by different companies, being released within the same edition. The error made in LA was numbering the prints released there out of 500 (in line with what seems to have been the original plan), instead of creating a separate edition of 100 for those prints.
