Kunstrasen 'most is what you make of it' print (finally!) , by nex on Nov 15, 2017 0:52:36 GMT 1, Context is everything.
Illegal street art, became illegal street art with a print release, became illegal street art with gallery shows, became murals with a print release/gallery show, became no street work and an image that looked like it was born of the street ....
For those of us who remember a time before all of the above, it’s hard not to be dispirited that the central theme overtaking all ... is money

Kunstrasen 'most is what you make of it' print (finally!) , by Express Post on Nov 15, 2017 0:56:26 GMT 1, I was going to write my thoughts but who cares? If I say I don’t like it or I don’t see a meaning in it you’ll tell me I’m wrong. So here you go. I find it dull, repetitive, uninspired and derivative. I find it a good example of why stencils have ruined genuine artistic talent and why urban art is sterile and boring at the moment. I find the use of stencils by artists who don’t paint on the street lazy, and I think artists should develop a skill, practice it, and try to become better, rather than just selling prints of every painting they make. To sum up. Meh. Are you talking about banksy prints? And for what it’s worth can you explain why it is dull repetitive uninspired and derivative? Only because it’s a stencil?
Probably a reason Banksys from the past are still relevant, is that because not many artists have been able to take it to the next level. Banksy elevated and guided the movement from where blek and many others left off. He used humour, irony and wit plus a pretty picture.

Kunstrasen 'most is what you make of it' print (finally!) , by Rouen Cathedral on Nov 15, 2017 1:01:15 GMT 1, SO I guess all those with a distaste for this feel the same about balloon girl. Lol Interesting point. It has something to do with the times that we are in. If balloon girl was made up in the last year, then it would be derivative, dull and uninspiring because of how far stencil/street art has come. Balloon girl was new and fresh in the noughties. Stencils weren't a big thing then, and was viewed as defacement and vandalism. You got chased by the fuzz. They didn't teach this in art school. It was about having your own identity, pushing the boundaries and crossing that line. After the last 18 years, stencils/street art has progressed from subvervise to mainstream. Commerce has definitely influenced this. At the end we should look into the context of any art that has been created, and see how it slots into art history before calling it out. For street art made today, I expect more given the platform that pioneering artists' legacies have afforded the current generation. In this case the work is safe and accessible, and for the most part will look good on any wall. It has become formulaic. Its artistic merits and what it stands for will still be up for academic debate.
Good discussion.
So where does the election balloon girl fall in.
Now if anyone is asking that seems derivative, uninspired and lazy for an image.

The thing is the main man is arguably part of ‘the money’ yet mention him and money in the same sentence and those same nostalgic people will scream at you.

Still a basic image, but rich with history and you can't topple an icon.

Recycling your own ‘icon’.
Arrogance, genius, or lazy? Or all three?

Of course he is complicit as we all are, but, it is clear with so much of banksys work it is a means to an end, there’s more often than not a societal theme and message, often with a charitable element too.
When I see wall friendly stencils on canvas I see a vacuum of reason, without a character behind them to give them more.

I’m not sure kunstrasen is so worried about wall friendly. Seems convient to play that card here but plenty of his other works are far from it.
What’s that one? Gloria? Since that’s not ‘wall friendly’ I guess it has character huh?

Sure didn’t seem like a joke to all the fans in here salivating to take the bribe and send a photo of their ballet.
I guess that was the money talking right? Like you mentioned above...

So are we critiquing the scene or the artist? Because yes obviously everything that involves banksy has a price tag attached it, that is unfortunately where we are. And no it’s not great. As he said himself it was a stupid idea.

Artist impact the scene. If banksy wanted to crash his market he could easily do so. That tells something.

Seems a little odd to trash artist C for being similar to B. But praise B and forget about A whim B is similar to.

Oh the good old blek didn’t influence banksy! - signed banksy fanboy argument.
Come on.
Sure kunstrasen is influenced by banksy but he’s probably the best at doing something similar and still coming up with new stuff since banksy. And it’s not for lack of other artists trying. That shows something.

Why would we not talk about banksy. It’s being said he’s copying him?
So if banksy does it great! If it’s someone else bad!
Speaking of meaningless it would apply to your post.
Sorry you have trouble finding meaning in nice images. Must be sad!

If we are discussing pretty pictures, this work ticks that box.
Sure there is something motivational and maybe sentimental in the title that best explains the image.
But comparing Banksy to Kunstrasen is like chalk and cheese.
A lot of Banksy's work is satire, whether social or political. It isn't about demonstrating the painting skills of the individual. There are better painters with a brush or spraycan out there, better illustrators with a pen or pencil, concept artists with access to the best fabricators, many people who are skilled with their hands.
I don't think Banksy would have put out something like this unless it was relevant or in response to a current affair
With Banksy's work, it is more about the idea and the delivery of that idea.

Kunstrasen 'most is what you make of it' print (finally!) , by saint on Nov 15, 2017 6:57:44 GMT 1, I was going to write my thoughts but who cares?
Oh you mentioned banksy. Surprise.
This is why there is no point discussing anything with you.
You asked for my critique I gave it, you’re not happy with it, you decide to bring up a different artist, rather than discussing this one.
Well done.
To answer then. It’s dull because I don’t find it an interesting image. It’s repetitive because so many artists have gone down the theme of using a simple stencil and adding spots of colour to them, especially animals and using the colours to be either the spots or stripes of colour. It’s unispired because it shows little inspiration from the artist. It’s derivative because it’s a badly executed and poorly thought out piece, in a time when a lot of stencil art is badly executed and poorly thought out.
No it’s not “just because it’s a stencil”.
This is just my opinion and my thoughts on this particular piece of art.
You are welcome to like it or not, but don’t ask for a critique and then start crying when it’s not what you want to hear.
And before you say “when banksy gets critiqued all the fanboys start crying” or similar, I don’t care. We’re not talking about a different artist here, we’re talking about this one.

To sum up. Meh. Are you talking about banksy prints? And for what it’s worth can you explain why it is dull repetitive uninspired and derivative? Only because it’s a stencil?

Kunstrasen 'most is what you make of it' print (finally!) , by hopz121 on Nov 15, 2017 9:32:07 GMT 1, they usually email a pre-order link if you're on their mailing list, I haven't seen one yet? Anyone else? I got the pre-order email, which went out yesterday. I had sent an email earlier this month expressing interest in purchasing the piece. I am super stoked to get this piece. It is very much enjoyable to look at and is quite cheap, especially considering the amount of hand finishing that is put into it. I look forward to framing and getting on the wall.
No pre order link here either, a shame really as I have messaged GP multiple times in the months leading up to it stating how interested I was
Also sent an email to them yesterday about it and didn't get a reply which was disappointing.
Ill try and get one through the normal means I guess.

Kunstrasen 'most is what you make of it' print (finally!) , by Express Post on Nov 15, 2017 11:19:10 GMT 1, I agree for those who want kid friendly it is that, at an affordable price. Just depends on the age of your kid and whether one wants to push them. My yellow KAWS Spongebob is also kid friendly, and my kid is excited to see the Liu Bolin book and print that arrived yesterday. Affordable?? At 175 GBP? I am in the Twilight Zone? Fact is that kids don't care much about name of artists and their taste change very fast... you are better of with $25 posters or even $50-80 animated cels.
When you consider the hand finished nature and popularity of the image, Gbp 175 becomes reasonable.
Even if you don't think these are good value, there will still be enough demand to sell out this edition.

But it's not just for kids mate. I think you're missing the point, a lot of adults like the image too. I like the image and the artist.

Kunstrasen 'most is what you make of it' print (finally!) , by Rouen Cathedral on Nov 15, 2017 13:04:35 GMT 1, Are you talking about banksy prints? And for what it’s worth can you explain why it is dull repetitive uninspired and derivative? Only because it’s a stencil?
Finally some actual thoughts besides ‘meh’. Good to hear the opinion. Although I disagree it’s a lot more valid then saying ‘meh’.
Artists don’t occur in a vacuum so of course how their work relates to other artists is valid. Especially when one praises/critiques one artist for something then does the opposite for another.

Finally a response from you that doesn't involve questions or referring to Banksy. Good to see. A lot more valid that asking questions again and again, over and over.
I realise artists take influence from other artists, I don't agree that praising one artist and critiquing a different artist is comparable, unless they have both done the same thing, and in which case you should re-read my points about why I dont like this particular image.
I certainly don't agree with bringing up a different artist on an artists release thread and trying to make it about them, and not about the original artist.
Enjoy the print if you bought it.

Kunstrasen 'most is what you make of it' print (finally!) , by Rouen Cathedral on Nov 15, 2017 13:24:08 GMT 1, Why would we not talk about banksy. I don't think Banksy would have put out something like this unless it was relevant or in response to a current affair With Banksy's work, it is more about the idea and the delivery of that idea.
Not sure how this isn’t ‘relevant’. Have you been following the world recently? If you view this work in a way many previous members have explained then I don’t see how anything could be more relevant.
Is it because it isn’t shocking? It isn’t vulgar? Doesn’t contain a bad word? The things people call good art vs not good art these days is mostly rubbish and based on the buzz of the scene and money!
Here’s an artist producing a nice image with an intriguing title and giving the viewer a sense of its meaning while also leaving the viewers perception to ultimately decide for themselves. It’s nicely executed, a nod to history, and technically impressive as they will all be hand painted showing the artists craft. It’s personal, creative and can relate to someone of all ages.
But hey you can go spend 20k on a redrawn snoopy with Xs on its eyes cause that’s ‘great art’!

I don't disagree with you about the nice image. The title divorced from the image can be viewed as motivational maybe uplifting.
Banksy targets an actual issue, and this generates conversation and discussion. The Kunstrasen isn't a commentary on anything in particular except for the mood it evokes and promotes a positive mindset and view. This categorises it as an encouragement piece. However we already have the David Shrigley's Really Good thumbs up. In terms of relevance to the world issues, does the Kunstrasen deal with gun control? No. Refugees? No. Trump? No. North Korea? no. Same Sex Marriage?... maybe, because of all the colours??
When it comes to critiquing technique, it is difficult to understand what is a good stencil as it can be cut by laser nowadays. Penny, Logan Hicks, SNIK and Nils Westergard put in massive hours to create layers of stencils for their images. Technically the Kunstrasen isn't of the same level of effort or execution. Not saying Banksy is either, but again it is the thought which uses the image as a conduit to get the message across. And Banksy's punchlines are always on point. Also painting coloured spots on a dalmatian's torso isn't the same as pushing pigments on canvas like Bacon or Freud or contemporary artists like Liu Xiaodong, Zeng Fanzhi, Dumas, Hockney, Currin, and Close.
As for Kaws, the prints he produces are of excellent quality. And at the moment the market responds positively to his work. How long this will last is anyone's guess.
