Artists who are called a "Sellout", by Daniel Silk on Nov 16, 2017 3:38:27 GMT 1, Artists who are called a "Sellout"
Do you think it's fair to call an Artist a Sellout? It seems to be a common word used around the scene in the last few years, as if becoming popular makes you a Sellout. Do you think any Artists in this scene can justifiably be called a Sellout, Who and why?

Artists who are called a "Sellout", by gd79 on Nov 16, 2017 6:59:26 GMT 1, Rembrandt was a prolific printmaker back in the 17th century. Made litterally hundreds of prints, editioned them and sold them. To be fair, he pretty much established the craft and advanced the methods significantly... But I think it is an important example in looking at this question. Artists can be prolific and they can be 'sell outs', but one does not imply the other.
Many artists have prolific levels of productivity because they are pushing the boundaries, experimenting, getting ideas out. If these all came to the market they'd probably be labelled sell outs, but they tend to be quite careful. WeiWei is prolific, but is he a sell out?
Others churn out stuff purely for the monetary gain. Like a cash note printing machine - just throwing out stuff that will sell easily. It doesn't have to be expensive - there are ranks of almost unknown artists that specialise in this kind of thing.

Artists who are called a "Sellout", by Daniel Silk on Nov 18, 2017 6:19:28 GMT 1, Being an artist is a job just like anyone else's, so I don't see the problem in what they sell. The only times the word Sell out might be justified if the artist is very political or vocal on social issues or maybe the art has that type of messages behind it, and the way their work is promoted and sold raises questions.

The only times the word Sell out might be justified if the artist is very political or vocal on social issues or maybe the art has that type of messages behind it, and the way their work is promoted and sold raises questions. Yes and No - a large number of artists do not make a living off their art, so artists are viewed as dedicated and passionate bunch. Individuals in love with their craft so much that they are willing to sacrifice financial security, friendships, and so on to be able to grow and better their talent. Folks love the romanticized ideal of the starving artist - whether it be theater, music, etc... The public don't view artists as entrepreneurs - their craft should be enough satisfaction, similar to perhaps how educators are viewed. Just look at the all the posts complaining about sales threads - a number of users are indignant by the capitalization of urban art. Urban art by its very nature is subversive, so I don't think folks care too much about political stances on social issues, as long as they tend to be progressive. Honestly, if urban art is subversive (or it used to be at one point), I think by its very nature, urban art is progressive. Eh, I just rambled and forgot what my point once - I'll revisit in the morning.

Artists who are called a "Sellout", by hui on Nov 18, 2017 6:54:13 GMT 1, Someone referred to Kunstrasen's recent release as similar to any of the mass produced art found in Ikea or in a university dorm. Not sure how I want to weave this into my previous comment, but I'm posting a comment to remember tomorrow morning. Those folks involved in those discussions could probably provide a more concise and coherent thought than me.
(oh, and before the notifications start going off:
1.) I support artist making money, hell, I tend to contribute a bit. 2.) I don't care about Kunstrasen's recent release, but hey, that's OK. In fact, that's better for you (not really, but you know what I mean.) 3.) I just wanted to contribute to the thread - I don't mind playing devils advocate at times or wasting your time reading my comments.

Artists who are called a "Sellout", by Deleted on Nov 18, 2017 9:16:05 GMT 1, Most instances of an artist re-releasing the same or very similar print warrants the term. In recent times that would apply to Eelus (exact image done as a lenticular) and Banksy with the new print, which of course doesn't get challenged as it's Banksy. I'd use the term in general when an artist has a high level of skill but chooses not to use it and instead pumps out lazy stuff. In music, there are also dozens of examples of this.
