Martin Whatson - general thoughts?, by jeeves on Nov 23, 2017 10:37:36 GMT 1, Hi all,
This guys seems super popular so if possible could some fans out there to explain what it is they like about his stuff please?
I have never seen someone regurgitate the exact same idea over and over and over again and loads of people still love it.. How long can someone just put the exact same graff scrible on different animals/objects?!
The one thing I do find interesting is trying to guess what is next to get the treatment - have seen a yacht, an iguana, a tutu, a statue - maybe a toaster perhaps?..
Is the appeal that people see his graff scribble as cool and urban or something?
This is a genuine question, I am not trying to be facetious / offensive or something. Of course a big part of appreciating art is having your own tastes and I respect that / don't judge anyone for it at all - I just really, genuinely want to understand!
Cheers

The subject has been done to death tbh - do a bit of research on the forum and you will find plenty of threads debating this over and over.
Seems like you're just trying to provoke a reaction.

As you say its just graffing over objects, i wouldnt lose sleep over it.

His art pairs well with the latest in interior design. The work comes across as bold and edgy for the uninitiated. His modus operandi is to stencil something representational, and then rainbow it up in his graffiti-esque style of writing.
However you are already on this board, so your awareness and appreciation of art runs a little deeper. You and others before you have questioned the meaning of his work, going around in circles with no end.
His work is accessible. It is collected by thousands and loved by tens of thousands outside this community. While some of the board may thumb their noses at his work and will continue to do so, he no longer needs the board's support.
Plus it doesn't hurt that the print quality that gp put out for him are the gold standard in affordable print editions. I.e. Where can you find 50 by 70 CM 28 layered silkscreens for 250quid?

Haven't seen anyone asking about that. Perhaps you care to explain that to me then.
Don't like it? Don't buy it!

Cheers Well, first of all this is not correct. You cant pick just some of his works and make a conclusion. Just lack of knowledge then. Eternal reflection, chinook hearts etc, quality. Yes, then he also has this "graff scible" going on, but people find his works affordable, eyecathing, colorfull, it adds something to nice images. Many other artists have their style which they tend to repeat, Chevrier etc.

Hush - Same image and design over loads of prints Invader - Tiles style Pure Evil - Always same style of eye drop etc etc etc
If you like his work, you like his work. Doesn't matter if he does the same stuff/style.
Personally I love it. I like the bright colours over the black and white images.

Martin Whatson - general thoughts?, by Lunch Special on Nov 23, 2017 13:41:53 GMT 1, Artists go through progressional phases and some get stuck and some stick to what works. I own martin whatson's first print Qrelease the washer from edge art in 2009. Paid ยฃ25 plus shipping. Since then I've purchased directly from the old control84 site a bunch of his earlier prints. I also have eternal reflection, one small step, a small gold chinooks unsigned and behind the curtain. Never thought of him as a one trick pony. I look at it more as a step or a stop in an artists ever changing progress.
As far as hush, never interested me. The damien hirst spots are cool. Never got into them either got some of the supreme decks that's about it. Stik is whatever's not much artistic or creative process I don't think. Just very relevant and impactful with a general innocence to them that makes them so desirables guessing.

Everyone whoโs seen my new dancer print loves it they now nothing about art apart from if it looks good. If I had the same dancer on my wall with out the tagging I think theyโd be asking wtf do you have a ballet dancer on your wall for? The tagging work with some stuff not with other. Itโs also affordable if bought at retail. My 2p.

I think I agree that it is about easy accessibility, the initial idea is interesting indeed and I imagine a lot of people that buy his stuff do not see (or maybe care) that it is just all the same. Must be quite an easy buck doing it like him and catering for somewhat of a mass market who want just to affordably dip their toe into something 'urban', hmmm just need a half decent idea now..

Martin Whatson - general thoughts?, by moron on Nov 23, 2017 18:12:22 GMT 1, As above. It's decorative, colorful, wall friendly, safe, Banksy lite. Sold by middle of the road galleries with good sales pitch to most probably young professional couples under the guise of original art that will hold it's value and a potential investment. I doubt the galleries selling this stuff would pay a fraction of the selling price if buying back or exchanging for other art the sell. I also assume the galleries leave out the important things like technique and how Whatson came up with the finished product. Buyers probably think he does it all free hand starting with a blanc canvas or sheet of paper

At some point maybe we should enjoy the art for the simple visual eye candy that it is and not over think the complexities of it all.

Martin Whatson - general thoughts?, by kapusta on Nov 23, 2017 19:39:52 GMT 1, I find Whatson's work to be a refreshing visual break. Many of the artists I follow and enjoy create work that's thought provoking or complex. I love that... in a gallery/museum setting. Maybe even sprinkled across my home.
But when I'm lounging around my home, sometimes I just want eye-candy. Whatson's work is eye-candy, and I'm okay with that. I'm a sucker for tastefully colorful art. His art adds vibrancy to people's walls with a "street/urban" art flair.
