Any Haring experts? Quick Print question, by Dexter Bulldog on Dec 26, 2017 4:29:10 GMT 1, Was at a friend of a friends who has a few pieces from an old business associate in the 80s but only has small knowledge to the whole collecting aspect, theyve just hung them and enjoyed for decades. One print was labeled t/p x/5 would assume thatโs โtest printโ? The other had no number, just โhcโ on it. A quick google didnโt turn up any answers so figured would ask here if anyone knows.
Thanks

Thanks H.C. stands for "hors de commerce" (not meant for sale).

Any Haring experts? Quick Print question, by chr1s on Dec 26, 2017 4:53:31 GMT 1, The term Hors Commerce means "out of trade" or "not to sell" which doesn't necessarily mean they won't ever be sold. Like an artist's proof (AP) these prints are generally only available from the artist directly. And if the artist decides to sell the prints or gift them to a friend they could eventually end up in the market. It's not unusual to see Keith Haring HC prints sold at auction or in galleries.
I graduated from Pratt Institute with a degree in print making and happened to have curated a Keith Haring print exhibit in 2016.

Any Haring experts? Quick Print question, by Brushstrokes 75 on Dec 26, 2017 5:10:13 GMT 1, TP is trial proof usually.
It usually is the same run but in different color variant than the edition.
HC means hors de commerce as the guys mentionned before. Those used to be the prints the artists would gift to friends, clients that the publisher would keep etc

Any Haring experts? Quick Print question, by Brushstrokes 75 on Dec 26, 2017 5:20:49 GMT 1, Different abbrevation. In general those are the main ones :
AP - EA - Epreuve d'Artiste - Artist's proofs, HC - Hors commerce (Not for sale) BAT - Bon a tirer (ready to print PP - printer's proof TC or CTP : Trial proof/Color Trial proof
Some artists/printers englobe all of them into APs nowadays.
so back in the days you could have an edition 100 regular + 10 AP + 5 HC + 3 TP (or CTP) + 2 PP
I know prints final ed of 50 where there are more than 50 APs.
