London food, by Amber Halo on Jan 7, 2018 22:48:54 GMT 1, Heading to London soon and could use some restaurant/food ideas. All suggestions welcome, though keen on ideas for causal spots especially for Indian, good pubs, fish and chips (figuring high end might be easier to figure out than good local, under the radar sports). Thanks in advance!

London food, by JW on Jan 7, 2018 23:20:26 GMT 1, For casual/cool Indian, Dishoom is my favourite. There's a few of them now, and I just tried the Kensington branch which was great.
The Shoreditch one is best for brunch (better in Summer on the patio). Do yourself a favour and try the bacon naan.

MICHELIN GUIDE
There are chippies, and there is the Mayfair Chippy. Here you can get cocktails, wine, oysters, starters and dessert but, most significantly, the 'Mayfair Classic' - fried cod or haddock with chips, tartar sauce, mushy peas and curry sauce.

Agreed on Dishoom. And Kricket too for Indian small plate type eats. Both can be found in Soho.

London food, by cizza19 on Jan 7, 2018 23:50:51 GMT 1, Dishoom is good for a higher end take on Indian. I would also suggest in the same vein cinnamon kitchen or cinnamon bazaar (or even cinnamon club at the even higher end) all are great, bazaar is the most relaxed and cheapest.
For a nice cheap dirty but tasty Indian I always like alladins 2 in brick lane or hot stuff in Vauxhall (the later got a great review by jay reyner the food critic) both BYOB and both great in my opinion

Mangal2! What a place. Not for the vegetarians, and BYO unless it's changed alc policy. Highly recommend.

To those that asked, it looks like I will be staying near the Covent Garden area. But please donโt let that restrict recommendations. I will travel for the good stuff...
No set budget. Thatโs not a big concern, and I would welcome high end ideas too. I just tend to think the causal, good local spots are a heck of a lot harder to find for tourists like me!

London food, by The Jokers Puppet on Jan 8, 2018 7:34:55 GMT 1, If you are staying in Covent Garden then Punjab is worth trying. Its the oldest North Indian restaurant in the UK and the food is excellent. The interior is nothing fancy but the service and food are great. The vegetarian dishes are superb ( I am a meat eater). Not expensive but they can get busy.

also if you like art, the ivy had some nice bits and also the tramshed has a hirst 'cow' the in the middle of the restaurant as well as connor harrington front doors

London food, by gd79 on Jan 8, 2018 20:55:41 GMT 1, I agree with almost everything above. If you can only eat Indian food once in your life, make it Tayyabs... Although it was a bit 'production line' the last time I went. Gymkhana is fantastic, but also five times the price! Dishoom a middle ground of sorts, and better for atmosphere.
Drummond Street a great shout for Indian. Haven't been there in ages. Truly shows the different styles of cuisine within the continent.
If I ate in covent garden I'd go to opera tavern and/or shackfuyu. Depending where you are from - NY does Japanese junk food better for example.
For pubs, nowhere is better than Hampstead. Walk on the heath followed by the wells, or the horseshoe for Sunday lunch (home of Camden beer).
Getting hungry just thinking about it.

Ha - indeed it is Pakistani, I'm being lazy with my references. Pretty sure it's not closed though, unless that has changed in the last weeks

London food, by JW on Jan 8, 2018 22:14:59 GMT 1, Hoppers is also great if you want to try some Sri Lankan. The original Soho branch is tiny and very popular so queuing times can be outrageous. But you can leave your name, go have a drink and they'll text you when ready. Or go for lunch.
Otherwise the St Christopher's Place branch is bigger and easier to get into.
Get an egg hopper and dip it in curry. Delicious.

It was closed for a little bit around September last year due to immigration issues. It reopened and believe it to still be operating.
Needoo's round the corner is better though and no queueing.

London food, by jonahj on Jan 9, 2018 16:47:40 GMT 1, Blimey - a post about food on an art forum site. Does it get any better?
Can only support previous posts about Hoppers.
Tayaabs - dry meat curry and lamb chops outstanding but they rush you through the meal when there's a queue outside.
Don't think anyone has mentioned Gunpowder in Spitalfields - doesn't take bookings but you can go a nearby pub and they will text you when your table is free.
Not an Indian/Pakistani/Sri Lankan but I was blown away by Temper in Soho last week which is a modern twist on BBQ with a 4.5 metre smoke pit in the middle of the restaurant. Expensive - so go for a blow out. Also, even the veggies are cooked in beef or lamb fat - so don't go if you don't eat meat.
