It's an installation, and it relates specifically to the large scale images of athletes he installed during the Rio games.
It's what he has always done in varying forms whether the Olympics, Mexican border, Louvre, New York city square, Kenyan shanty town, Brazilian favela etc.
I guess one person's art is another's gimmick.

When JR did his women are heros photos in Africa, did he pay the women who he photographed? I hope he did.

I will be going to the talk tonight. Hope to see some forumites there

Installations simply used to sell work in a show isn't something I've ever been that happy with - again no right to feel that way - but still....

I think back stories and journey do put things into perspective, like Stiks, not that I'm making that comparison. He was a graffiti artist as youngster and found a way for people to put their lives on show to a certain extent. Ordinary people and their idiosyncrasies being brought out into the open. However these paste ups do more than reflect people and look at the community issues also.
From the riots at the start to women being heroes. The installations themselves take a lot of organising and constructing. He talked about drug dealers in the Favelas and how he immerses himself in their communities and creates the projects to give the community a voice. I throughly enjoyed it and found it informative.

Personally, a few nice bits but nothing is even get close to the line on.

JR Giants at Lazinc, by Martin M on Jan 12, 2018 19:00:13 GMT 1, Was a great night at the new gallery. Really busy. Usual great hospitality from Laz. The new gallery just reminded me of a slightly larger version of the Rathbone one. The JR pieces were really good, but very pricey.
A few pics below, but it was hard to get decent pics because of the crowd.
The Christ with shopping bags was brilliant, not seen it before this big.
the Floating girl was so lifelike and pretty freaky. Not sure who it was by, but really reminded me of "dead dad" by Ron Mueck the amazing piece that was at Sensation all those years ago.

It's a good piece, but hardly a groundbreaking trick... that rug is big enough to cover a pretty sturdy base!
