It's a different image all together. Basicly everything is of as I tried to illustrate below.
Although you would need to cut a different stencil for a street sign it would make no sense
to make a different image for it. You could cut the same image different, but that would not result in differences like this. I'm no Banksy expert, but did he sign street signs? The signature seems of as well.

Buying it at an auction house is not really provenance of authenticity. It just means someon else was fooled as well. The whole story about not being authenticated by POW sounds like a scam to me. That's just reversed logic. Do you have proof of POW rejecting authentication?

My guess is they said it was a fake and then conveniently the story was changed to not being authenticated because it was removed from it's orignal place. Which in itself could be true, but that does not mean it is real. 

So what is your friend going to do now?
Take his loss and enjoy this 50 pound street sign ?
Or play dumb and put it back on eBay for 15K?

He's had a mare there, I would cancel the sale.

I was kind of curious of where this image came from, since it's not a copy of the wall image.
Which would be the most logic to make a fake of.

Apparantly there is also a sticker / decal of this, sold by POW. Maybe some member can confirm.
That sticker named "Keep Left" is actually this image, so this street sign is based upon the POW sticker.

So if some Banksy expert member could shed some light on the signature tag..... it might be plausible.

More likely to be a fake, copied from the sticker.

Anyone who took this from the street would have taken pictures in situ... and most of the real Banksy street signs are documented somewhere.
So unlikely to be real... especially as this would be such a sort after, iconic image.

Also, I'd have assumed he'd have done this on a real "Keep Left" sign. Not any random road sign with a red circle.

And, this was a mural he painted huge, not something he used for small stencils... as far as I know.

I feel like it it was original someone would have known about it and bought it fast. Probably the person who bought it found out jt wasnt and tried to unload it on Ebay.

I just saw that the book "Wall and Peace by Banksy", that picture on the book seem to be closer then the other. But not sure its the same. If it happens to be "the same size" then it could be a lead...

Or its just another spot someone could have copied it from. And it doesnt mean he accually did a stencil like it.

The background white behind the black isn't formed by a stencil but freehand... suggesting plenty of time to make it if it can be freehand sprayed to fit where the image goes so nicely
Personally I think someone's used the A4 sticker image as a a base for a homebrew stencil and walloped it onto a randomly found or bought road sign. We all know with Banksy's work that context is everything and there isn't any apparent relevance to the subject of the sign and the stencil.

This is not a genuine fake..... so it's a fake fake. Does that make it real ?

But indeed as mr Guy Denning mentioned ; the freehand sprayed white bothered me as well.
The stencil is made to use negative space. So painting the background white first is kinda weird.
Especially with the flowers.
