JR: THE SAN FRANCISCO
MURAL PROJECT
2018
Inspired by the murals of Diego Rivera, French artist JR decided to imagine how a whole city can be represented through art. The idea is to portray as accurately as possible the entirety of a city.
The San Francisco Mural
After a first mural in Les Bosquets, a neighborhood near Paris where he has worked for many years, JR has chosen San Francisco, a city very rich in contrasts, whose recent history could be told in a powerful way through a mural. Since the visit of Diego Rivera in 1931, San Francisco has a long muralist tradition. The city features immense innovation and wealth as well as one of the highest rates of child homelessness in the country.
In San Francisco, JR will create both a still and a moving mural, capturing the nuances of the city at this moment in time, in a unique way.
Participate!
From January 15th to February 11th, 2018, a studio in the shape of a 53ft long trailer truck will travel to a different location every day, around San Francisco.
Come to one of the following locations to represent your community and be a part of this unique project!

Definitely good to know. Thanks for the heads up!

, by rms on Jan 24, 2018 12:33:46 GMT 1, The communitarian art tradition of San Francisco just isn't very good art. Community murals look like communist propaganda art. Give me NYC style bubble letters any day. That San Francisco's public funding for art emphasizes this kind of community thing really hurts our art scene.
The SF Bay Area art scene also makes sense upon visiting Burning Man. There are no good galleries here cause all of the serious artists spend too much time and energy and money building ephemeral styles of art for ten days in the desert that's mostly unsellable (except for the tree from last year, which I've heard has had multiple offers in the $10M range and the creators that only want to sell copies for $10M but everyone wants the original), but damn the art is good. Don't let anyone tell you Burning Man is bad now. 2017 particularly impressed with the ridiculous caliber of the motley array of merely 20 feet sculptures.
My friend Inga did a community mural in Flint pretty recently. It turned out well, though Flint itself isn't doing so well. inga-loyeva.com/Murals-Across-America-Flint Get in touch with her if your city really needs a community mural...
