Where does Banksy rank on your most influential visual artists of all time list? Let’s do everything from Pre-renaissance to now?

Where does Banksy rank on the Most Influential Artists?, by iamzero on Feb 2, 2018 22:25:39 GMT 1, Perhaps has something to do with dragging the graffiti and street art scene into mainstream galleries bringing an influx of fellow artist with him that would never have managed to kick down the doors without him. And also probably inspired a new generation to pick up a stencil and spray can... other thanthat, what has Banksy ever done for us?

Where does Banksy rank on the Most Influential Artists?, by moron on Feb 2, 2018 22:40:21 GMT 1, I don't know about all time but regarding the urban art scene I would say definately the most influential by far. He had a plan and stuck with it.
Warhol worked for an advertising agency as an artist I think before becoming electric wig. The sixties with Marlborough men smoking teflon cigarettes with all the advertising marketing publicity and media, Warhol was in the right place at the right time.
The same goes for Banksy. The art on walls Banksy made and the media worked perfectly together. Unfussy images one could see for a few seconds when on a bus and remember.
Warhol knew people in the media and his idea of making the product, or package (which an ad agency normally created) the art and exhibit it in a gallery. As all around Warhol knew, especially in New York is that publicity generates a lot of money if done right. So warhol got the attention then jumped on his own band wagon by producing prints of famous people, which people like Richard Prince do in a similar way today but in a very cynical offensive way. Warhol was the height of fashion and the coolest kid on the art block.
Of all time Banksy would be one of the most influential but depends how far back one goes. The Catholic church is highly inluential globally regarding influencing a style of art accepted by many without questioning it. There again, this thread is probably about the most influential commercially too.
I'd put Dada and Duchamp at the front, Warhol. I don't think Britartists as in Saatchi and sensation brought anything new but at the same time the Brit art movement very influential. The Chinese wave was more about seeking new art investments than anything new.
I'd put Banksy somewhere in the middle out of a top ten regarding all time and regarding urban art and the last two decades at number 1.

This is where I’m at so far. My list has banksy maybe in top 40-50?
Very interested in hearing case for top 10 and who else would be in their list.

Where does Banksy rank on the Most Influential Artists?, by South Bound on Feb 2, 2018 22:57:08 GMT 1, I think it also depends on who we are considering as artists.
I am leaving musicians out, as that would severely complicate the conversation. But are we also considering photographers (Henri Cartier-Bresson), Architects (Frank Lloyd Wright) and other art forms? I consider them both (Cartier-Bresson and Wright) artists of the highest order and both significantly more influential to modern culture than Banksy.

Tried to stick with visual artists. So musicians out. I think photographers in is fine. Architects I thought about but I’d exclude them as well.

Where does Banksy rank on the Most Influential Artists?, by Express Post on Feb 2, 2018 23:47:07 GMT 1, Influential street/urban artists, Banksy sits on top. In a popularity contest today, he'd also be in the top 10.
In terms of influential artists of all time top 10, you'd need a solid argument to kick out these artists first:
Da Vinci Titian Vermeer Matisse Cezanne Renoir Munch Klimt Gauguin Van Gogh Monet Turner Goya Picasso Duchamp Dali Pollock Rothko Da Kooning Johns Rauschenberg Twombly Kiefer Bacon Freud Richter Gursky Warhol Basquiat Haring Kusama Hirst Ai Weiwei Koons Murakami Zeng Fanzhi Zhang Xiaogang Kapoor Bourgeois

That’s a fine list. I would add off the top of my head
Egon Schiele Caravaggio Bernini Rodin Van Eyck Raphael Fra Angelica Gauguin Rego
In fact, as I go on it becomes apparent that this is a fruitless task. There are too many great artists to try to condense it in to a short list. Enjoy all art

Difficult task. Sure. Fruitless? No.
But I’m sure it was meant as more a dig at me so it’s fine. Haha.

Where does Banksy rank on the Most Influential Artists?, by Happy Shopper on Feb 4, 2018 16:47:18 GMT 1, I guess it depends what you mean by influencial. Leading a brand new movement, creating a brand new style, or just being great and admired by others (and whether that's during their time, or after their death, or only much later.)
There's quite a variety in the artists listed here!

Yeah. I think it can be a wide range of things. It being such a recent movement probably hurts cause time will tell a lot about the impact.
However I am having a hard time putting him in top 50 so far. Just surprised how so many have him in top 10.

I’ve got a list of about 30 right now that I can’t see Banksy being above. I then have a list of probably 60 more for which he is part of.

Where does Banksy rank on the Most Influential Artists?, by Matt on Feb 5, 2018 20:06:11 GMT 1, Rather than creating yet another thread, I'll hijack this pointless and baseless one to suggest that anyone who can, should go to the Hayward Gallery and catch the current Gursky expo.
Biggest collection of Gurskys I remember seeing, with close to 30 huge iconic pieces. The Gallery space lends itself incredibly well to the topic and the visuals, and Gursky's work is simply quite incredible and awe inspiring.
Looking at his photos today reminded me how basic and niche the art we discuss on here is

Pointless? Baseless? Someone seems grumpy today.
Good call on the Gutsky show.

Pointless because anyone who puts Banksy in the utmost influential artists of all time is ignorant, deluded or pursuing some other intent (never explain by malice etc...)
Pointless because after the handful of absolute masters, whether you are 37th or 63rd most influential makes no sense as a discussion.
And baseless because if we were to assume for a moment that someone really wanted to have this discussion, then surely a starting point would be to define the objective criteria by which artists would rank, but visibly that’s not worth the effort.
So no Banksy is not top 10 except definitely for “artist who’s venues serve the best pizza”...and that’s certainly not true of Gursky !

Guess you aren’t a fan of the ‘greatest’ ever sports discussions either :-).
I disagree. I think it’s a fun thought excercise. And sure there is a difference between 37 and 63. 63 means you aren’t that important.

Just for the sake of it then : how does tennis player 37 ATP differ from player 63 ATP, in a way that is meaningful and interesting and merits discussion...because even on a tennis forum I have never seen this discussion :-)

Errr that’s an objective based ranking system
ie. based on previous results

Well it would need to be like 37 greatest ever vs 63 ever. My answer would be that 37 May have been number one at one point. 63 May have been an under achieving guy who never made it to the top. Lots of things really!
