Last one I remember was Micallef and the mad rush to clear out the Eyestorm editions in 2006. I think they went in a day.

Spoke with Michael at Schafer and he said he didnt know what had hit him, around 5pm GMT he had very few prints left.

I think this is what they call a tipping point
Mr Shrigley has tipped (for now)
I really like this kind of thing. Similar thing happened with Stik with the sleeping baby, and as said earlier Micallef
its like there is a certain thing that happens that draws people like flies arounds**t.
I'd love someone with a biggish brain to tell me what is it
is it like a certain critical mass of ABC1 earners * Hype + speculation / research= Artist Tip.
in this instance the tiered pricing definitely had a effect on the speculation,
a print was valued at £6k therefore any print secured for well under that still had value.
'f**k art, let's speculate' . to be launched in 2019 when i find an artist to put it on a bit of paper for me with a rocket next to it . JBOY or is it Freeerange, (I forget who is pretending or denying who is who here at times) you still here?

I just cannot believe anyone would pay 1000's to have this on their wall. As for the DS buying frenzy yesterday in the hope that everything he has churned out turns to Gold, it's astonishing how some people are so easily led/mugged off!

David Shrigley - Be Nice, by Happy Shopper on Feb 9, 2018 10:12:13 GMT 1, I missed a few pages of this last night, but not sure why people are talking about a "buying frenzy" or comparing to Nick Walker or Micallef?
Those were very different sets of circumstances. Plus, in this case, we just have a small handful of people talking about other Shrigley prints available, and maybe buying one or 2... None seem to have suddenly sold out... All appear to still be available!
Walker was caused buy a fake auction sale at a time everyone wanted a "new banksy". Micallef got fucked by a too big and too expensive edition which failed to sell. Shrigley has a steady market, but people are more selective about images, and most prints are a little odd on their own.

But the spread between £1.8k and £6k is mindblowing, in particular on a single day. Either the print is worth £1.8k or £6k.... it can't be both!

We do buy and sell a 'small' amount of works on the secondary market, but we use this money to fund working with artists and putting on exhibitions, art fairs and facilitating outdoor commissions. We also work a lot of the time with charities.

You are of course right and I am sure know a huge amount More than I about everything to do with art, also being a dealer I should imagine your finger to be on the pulse of trends etc, so....
Though I don’t think anyone is comparing the artist to other artists, the comparison I made is the suddenness of how fast demand can rise for art works produced by artists
What in your opinion has caused the surge?
Why do People want to own some of his stuff that’s been for sale through various source for months and years?

David Shrigley - Be Nice, by whob1 on Feb 9, 2018 10:54:29 GMT 1, Its worth whatever people want to pay for it, like anything else. People spend their money on whatever suits them. If people dont like Shrigley, thats fair enough, believe whatever you want, but accept that many people do. He has had a slowly increasing popularity, high quality prints, with the finger statue, sketch and upcoming exhibition with hangup, he has drawn more and more attention. Its not a coincidence they will show his works next to Miller and Banksy, he is becoming more and more popular, he knows, hangup knows.

But the spread between £1.8k and £6k is mindblowing, in particular on a single day. Either the print is worth £1.8k or £6k.... it can't be both! Just my theory, but I think the rational is this... They've sold out at £5k before and auction sales have reached £5k... so they know there are people willing to pay that price... but probably not 125 people! So they set £5k as the target value, but tier it downwards to a price more people would be willing to pay (knowing that anyone following prices have seen the £5k selling prices, and will jump at the chance of scoring for cheaper).
Plus, in this case, they've made a £6k tier which is purely speculative.

I'm actually well-placed to answer this as I recently bought an etching from Denmark a few weeks ago, as I sort of saw the surge coming, but perhaps not as much as this.
I've always liked DS as an artist, and the reason I ended up buying the etching was because I wanted a piece of his artwork and I wanted to get in while it was still affordable to me. They have been around for a while, but recently I clocked on to rising prices, both primary and at auction. I also noticed that some galleries were starting to accept consignments, which is a sure-fire sign that the demand is there. So it was a case of now or never.
Also, just to point out, I was buying for me, to keep and frame, and not for MP.

David Shrigley - Be Nice, by Jimini Cricket on Feb 9, 2018 11:07:32 GMT 1, What is startling is the pace at which the launch price climbed to its current level.
Which made me realise from this experience was that the current demand for his works are unprecented, these prices that we're seeing will be the new normal and that there are enough people out there willing and able to drop stacks.
Good luck to the artist and good luck to the print houses. I will be looking elsewhere for my art fix.

David Shrigley - Be Nice, by Nuno on Feb 9, 2018 11:28:45 GMT 1, Has someone linked to the artist played a master stroke? Purchasing a print at auction for £4.5k and then selling 120 prints at an average £3k (?) instead of £1k. Incredible return on an investment made just a few weeks ago.
Disclaimer: no suggestion or knowledge that this has happened, merely that it could have.
