David Shrigley - Be Nice, by Guy Denning on Feb 8, 2018 17:05:44 GMT 1, I'd love to know the rational for a ยฃ6k top tier... There is no justification (in my opinion). It's a f##king print, and prints were originally defined as the 'affordable' side of original art. Just another shining example of the excesses of the last, legal, unregulated business model. As for them all being sold out... I could direct you to galleries that have multiple copies of signed editions, supplied directly from the artist (not Shrigley) that were 'sold out' when released online.

David Shrigley - Be Nice, by Guy Denning on Feb 8, 2018 17:26:12 GMT 1, Bad form from the artist then. Sometimes it's not up to the artist (regardless what galleries say in public). And despite what many people think, the artist is usually the least powerful in the art/gallery/buy/artist relationship. Most artists I know are not in the financial position of even being able to afford their own work if they wanted to buy it from the market place.

How is that possible??? Artist's get 50% of the selling price normally. Most, if they're making work that doesn't take half an hour to bang out, can only make enough work for a solo show perhaps every two years - unless their caffeinated base-cadets (sadly guilty in the past I must admit). Few shows sell out. Galleries raise prices of all artists in the hope that they will follow the prices of whatever 'big-hitters' they have on their books to primarily raise the profile of the gallery. An artist will normally have perhaps a couple or three mixed shows a year, and a solo show (in different countries) once a year (if they're lucky). Galleries hate artists selling direct (online in particular) and will frequently refuse to deal with them if they're doing so. It's not a quick and easy road to riches for 90+%.

And please, none of that "modern art = i could do that + yeah but you didn't." Because first off, modern art is period specific and this is about 50 years too late, and second, I'd bet most kids have done something exactly like, and probably in 3rd grade. Or 2nd form, for you brits.

So far a few of his works have been slowly increasing in value and harder to get, thats a good sign of increasing popularity.

David Shrigley - Be Nice, by nighthawk on Feb 8, 2018 19:26:42 GMT 1, While I get people being upset, (I also hate tiered pricing) I donโt get the hate and ill-will to the artist? Iโd imagine the prices are more gallery driven than anything else, and tiered pricing is nothing new. In fact many, many galleries, worldwide, sell this way.
Shrigley is surely not the next Nick Walker and surely everyone knew how this was going to go. It sounds like a bad case of โregretsโ at not picking it up in the 1st or 2nd/3rd tiers. If people didnโt buy the print, then the price wouldnโt have gone up, but thereโs obviously some interest in this particular print as many seem to have picked it up, and in later tiers. Iโm sure the remainder will sit now for quite some time, just like that Harland guyโs, that everyone passed on back in the day
I wish many artists whoโs works I like, were cheaper, but cโest la vie. I remember passing on Jonas Wood with these guys, when it got insanely high...ughhhh. In the end, but what you like/can, and pass on what you donโt/canโt. Anyone investing any more โemotional timeโ into this one, is purely wasting their day (IMO).
