MURAKAMI Modernica Rocker Chair - doesn't 'sit' right , by bigj on Feb 13, 2018 0:04:52 GMT 1, I just saw the MURAKAMI Modernica Rocker Chair for the first time.
Here's a link with more info - modernica.net/shop/modernica-x-murakami-x-complexcon2017
To be honest - I'm a bit surprised/disappointed with this collaboration. Modernica's chair appears to be a knock-off Eames chair.
In my view, this is comparable to a scenario in which a mainstream artist decides to do a collaboration with a Banksy image produced by WestCountryPrince.
I wonder if MURAKAMI explored a colab with Herman Miller or Vitra before doing this?
Am I way off base here? Would be interested to hear your thoughts.

As someone with a number of vintage Eames chairs (Zenith, Herman Miller, Vitra ) I agree with your take. Modernica seems to justify this unauthorized reproduction by saying they used to make them, and it's the same molds - doesn't work for me. Interested to hear other's opinions

MURAKAMI Modernica Rocker Chair - doesn't 'sit' right , by Cutkillavince on Feb 13, 2018 8:18:45 GMT 1, Not an expert, but I read the following, seems Modernica used to make chairs for HM (chairs made from the original machinery with fiberglass). In the late 80s, Eames decided to discontinue fiberglass shell production until a more suitable material could be found (due to environmental risks associated with fiberglass production) and now HM/Vitra are making chairs from some kind of plastic.
So Modernica stills do fiberglass chairs while HM/Vitra do plastic chairs

Yes this is correct. Most of the HM fiberglass chairs where made by Modernica.
But I would not touch any Vitra or Herman miller side chairs... they now have become a cliche that you can find in any interior.

Not sure about this!? Herman Miller made all the original Eames chairs. Modernica only used the same moulds after HM stopped.

Nah, the vintage stuff is still great. One of our chairs is next to our 'Fake Love' piece - looks sharp
