Another banksy in new york ? , by Art! on Mar 19, 2018 20:21:09 GMT 1, Funny, if the art is some sort of critique towards money driven people some of you guys immediately show your discontent with the piece(s). ...... just saying. I think it’s more of a critique of the execution of them. Not up to his usual high standards. But he's always had simple black and white pieces..
I like this one. Main guy looks like a developer (with the hard hat) who's driving housing prices up, and people who can't afford it out of the neighborhood.
edit: and now that I read the sign in the upper left corner, makes even more sense.

Errr...no. I just don’t think it’s very good.

How do you do such large pieces without getting caught ? Tip of the graph has to be about 15ft high ! and probably done in the middle of the night.

Another banksy in new york ? , by gravity1 on Mar 19, 2018 21:43:11 GMT 1, Firstly, Very important cause and piece. Great job with this hit team Banksy. Secondly, to the people asking where is the excitement? Banksy's popularity has certainly taken a noticeable dive especially in North America. His audience is now relatively small and with no support from MAJOR museums or a gallery representing him... I see this trend continuing into the future. It's all a side effect of the mystery gimmick aging poorly. As Pictures on Walls alluded to before its shut down this should have wrapped up a while ago. This has very little to do with people not being able to find the thread...just click Latest Threads.
It's the forum that has taken the dive, B's popularity and demand on the other hand has been skyrocketing as usual. Impossible to use this forum as a vantage point to assess anything.

I think you might be surprised how few know who Banksy is in the states. Just because his art is of value and the rich are buying them up means nothing in terms of his popularity more an indication of the demand for his work as he becomes the hot name for the rich collectors.

I don't think the mayor cares. If they wanted to catch banksy I'm pretty sure they could.

Another banksy in new york ? , by Not 4 The Thril on Mar 19, 2018 23:16:12 GMT 1, i like the piece. i wonder if he will take credit for it (and the seal playing with the ball) tomorrow. even tho pics have been popping up of these for about a week.
he also hasn't really updated his website- the cherubs from bethleham and the hull piece. i always wonder if he does a piece but doesn't 'authenticate' because maybe someone saw him in the process?

This piece is wonderful - a perfect example of presenting a multi layered message using your surrounding and easily understood imagery.
Capitalism thrives on indefinite growth, it makes slaves all of us, pushing us forward with no care for anything more than the bottom line. Inequality increases and we’re all just running to stay ahead of the pain that’s coming.

Personally think it’s a timely and relevant work about gentrification in neighborhoods and how this drives out the community. Noticing the construction hat on the whip wielding gent and the "generations" represented by the family being driven away.
The existing "demolition" and "for sale" banner is as much a part of the artwork as the barren landscape its placed in.

Another banksy in new york ? , by Wearology on Mar 20, 2018 2:02:10 GMT 1, My momma told me if I have nothing nice to say to just keep my mouth shut - but I can't bite my tongue on Banksy's 2 day soiree through NYC any longer. All the images were weak in message, weaker in execution, the placements were lazy, safe and predictable and the messages were all said before and seemed recycled. On a scale of 0 - 5 spray cans with 5 being the best - I give Banksy's NYC 48 hour publicity tour of 2018 1.5 spray cans.

Another banksy in new york ? , by stelio on Mar 20, 2018 2:23:57 GMT 1, This forums anti-hype continues to rain strong. The “remember where you are” quote become famous over on EB and seems to ring true here too. Guess the Banksy bubble is bursting with all the negativity. For everyone hating I’ll take those discounted Banksys now just sitting around. Message me with those low low prices!
I think the pieces claimed on IG are great and on par with what Banksy has done since his/their beginning. All of the new ones have a strong and direct mesaage or meaning if you’re paying attention.

Another banksy in new york ? , by cmc on Mar 20, 2018 2:40:44 GMT 1, I think it’s more of a critique of the execution of them.
Defo this - nicely interpreted.
It's about what we call gentrificaion in the uk.
Gentrification - Wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gentrification
Gentrification is a process of renovation of deteriorated urban neighborhoods by means of the influx of more affluent residents. This is a common and controversial topic in politics and in urban planning.

Maybe from a 1000 foot view this concept makes sense. But why this building?? Is this being whipped into a skyscraper. I don't think so. Is this neighborhood even transforming out of the ordinary or from capitalist greed?
This is a blank wall with a lease sign that can be found in almost any neighborhood in any city. Not sure I buy this as creative placement with a deeper overtone for a specific NYC neighborhood. More like a general comment that could be place on one of thousands of buildings on cities across the nation. Pretty lackluster. Not sure I can buy this placement story. I drove by 20 buildings like this today in a copy hundreds of miles away.

www.brooklyndaily.com/stories/2017/2/bn-catsimatidis-building-ocean-dreams-in-coney-2017-06-01-bk.html
Quote from the billionaire developer:
“We have not decided 100 percent what we’re going to do,” Catsimatidis said. “The views are to kill for"
Catsimatidis has amassed lots between W. 35th and W. 37th streets for his Ocean Dreams project, which he has been trying to build since 2005 and would include 415 apartments across three towers. The Manhattan developer’s latest addition was the block-sized former Federation Employment and Guidance Service building on Surf Avenue and W. 35th Street for $7.7 million in May, dashing locals’ hopes that the city would build a community center there.

That project is about 6-7 miles away from the banksy piece. That's pretty far in NYC. Now if that banksy piece had gone up on those lots... Then maybe id buy the placement a little more.

That project is about 6-7 miles away from the banksy piece. That's pretty far in NYC. Now if that banksy piece had gone up on those lots... Then maybe id buy the placement a little more.

Im in real estate and this is absolute nonsense. PPS,Ditmas Park,Fiske Terrace,Midwood etc are not struggling against gentrification. It mainly single family houses and small co-op building with rentals mixed in. Zoning restrictions make it next to impossible for ‘gentrification’ to happen there. Now N.Brookyn is a totally different story and you could make the case in Southern Brooklyn(Coney Island/Sheepshead Bay).

Another banksy in new york ? , by cmc on Mar 20, 2018 3:52:33 GMT 1, There is also something interesting about the 'performing seal'
It has long beeen a known fact that street art plays a part in gentrification, it can make an area 'cooler' and more 'hip' attracting other artists, cafe's, smaller businesses and increasing property value.
Is Banksy commenting on other street artists being performing seals by doing this?
Is he being a seal himself?

Another banksy in new york ? , by nex on Mar 20, 2018 4:25:48 GMT 1, My momma told me if I have nothing nice to say to just keep my mouth shut - but I can't bite my tongue on Banksy's 2 day soiree through NYC any longer.
Here’s the thing it’s possible to discuss the same themes again and again, if youve new ways of putting it and the message is still relevant
Given art can grades ... not so much
