Another banksy in new york ? , by Fะฏ on Mar 20, 2018 8:37:24 GMT 1, This piece is wonderful - a perfect example of presenting a multi layered message using your surrounding and easily understood imagery. Capitalism thrives on indefinite growth, it makes slaves all of us, pushing us forward with no care for anything more than the bottom line. Inequality increases and weโre all just running to stay ahead of the pain thatโs coming. If banksy ever did a range of butt plugs...first in line.

Sure, the chosen wall might look a bit random, but there probably will arise a new building soon anyway and cover it. Great piece!

Another banksy in new york ? , by northfaced on Mar 20, 2018 11:58:57 GMT 1, I went to this one on Saturday and must say, the placement of the piece is pretty perfect. Take the drive over to it; $1Mil home, $1Mil home, $1Mil home...blocks and blocks of mansions and perfect landscaped driveways filled with luxury cars. Then you get to Coney Island Ave. and it looks like a ghetto in comparison. Even the direction the developer is facing follows the path they are driving people from the rich/mansions towards the "ghetto" area. That exact cross street is the dividing line. Going neighborhood to neighborhood really proves this. Just follow Avenue I to get the picture. It kind of blew my mind to see a destroyed gas station literally a street from million dollar homes.

Another banksy in new york ? , by Hairbland on Mar 20, 2018 12:10:40 GMT 1, Don't forget this is pure vandalism !ย The mayor of New York would give anything to catch Banksy after the BOTI stunt so I bet it's squeaky bum time for him everytime he goes out to get up. not easy I don't think the mayor cares. If they wanted to catch banksy I'm pretty sure they could. . Different mayor from last time.

Another banksy in new york ? , by Hairbland on Mar 20, 2018 12:14:26 GMT 1, Case in point. The detail yet simplicity of Nola is pure class whereas the arrow whip of the latest offering just looks awkward. I like the idea but the presentation of it is poor by Banksy standards. How do you do such large pieces without getting caught ?ย ย Tip of the graph has to be about 15ft high !ย and probably done in the middle of the night. . They do it during the day, with proper work coveralls, looking as if they belong there. They prefer to not work at night, as that is when one is more likely to be caught.

Another banksy in new york ? , by Hairbland on Mar 20, 2018 12:18:36 GMT 1, I think itโs more of a critique of the execution of them. Not up to his usual high standards. But he's always had simple black and white pieces.. I like this one.ย Main guy looks like a developer (with the hard hat) who's driving housing prices up, and people who can't afford it out of the neighborhood. edit: and now that I read the sign in the upper left corner, makes even more sense. Developer looks like Trump, who has been trumpeting the stock market loudly. Trump's father razed much of the original Coney Island amusement park to build apartment complexes.

Not sure what you are talking about Coney island Ave being a dividing line. There's got to be about 100 homes for sale at 1+ million in a 2 mile radius from the piece in every direction.

Another banksy in new york ? , by Wearology on Mar 20, 2018 13:13:46 GMT 1, My momma told me if I have nothing nice to say to just keep my mouth shut - but I can't bite my tongue on Banksy's 2 day soiree through NYC any longer. All the images were weak in message, weaker in execution, the placements were lazy, safe and predictable and the messages were all said before and seemed recycled. On a scale of 0 - 5 spray cans with 5 being the best - I give Banksy's NYC 48 hour publicity tour of 2018 1.5 spray cans. Hereโs the thing itโs possible to discuss the same themes again and again, if youve new ways of putting it and the message is still relevant Given art can grades ... not so much As I get older - I become more bitter and cynical. It seems that when a struggling street artist makes fun of capitalism on a public wall - it holds a message of power to the people - but when an uber wealthy established artist who flies around the world on daily painting jaunts publicly criticizes capitalism it falls a bit short. Its like a politician tagging the White House and saying politicians have too much power. Sometimes it is hard to separate the message from the messenger -

I would argue that we need more politicians saying that they hold too much power (although unlikely). The louder the voice the stronger the message. I think Banksyโs stature gives a lot more visibility to the affects of gentrification on neighborhoods than had this been someone else. He has also had a history of drawing attention to issues of human displacement. I donโt believe that wealth, success, or power should be an immediate disqualifier for giving voice to issues like these.

Once again this is fine from a 1000 foot view. But banksy is best known for his precision and placement. This work falls face down in the dirt in that regards.
It would be like him having sprayed Nola in Jacksonville.

Another banksy in new york ? , by jimbofatz on Mar 20, 2018 14:24:42 GMT 1, A glaring problem with these pieces are that they are obviously cut, designed and applied by different folks-- there is no continuity with these pieces whatsoever. It's like an art student handing in three very different pieces under the same name. It's very glaring in this set done over one weekend. The only thing these pieces have in common is an Instagram account.
Age old argument on this board but by this point we've all seen enough Banksy work to notice it. Banksy is in need of a redesign as a project.

Can you share the information you have? What large gallery museums have he turned down?

In this day and age I donโt think pieces such as those in NY mean much. People see enough political propaganda on social media..... itโs cool for a minute people take pictures and move on. Theyโd react the same if Fairey, Kaws or someone else known tagged the wall.

Sometimes it is hard to separate the message from the messenger - Stop and think about what you are saying here. "when a struggling street artist makes fun of capitalism on a public wall - it holds a message of power to the people".
Now go back and look through Wall and Piece. Banksy was indeed a struggling street artist making fun of capitalism on public walls. And he was so good at it that he became an iconic street artist, and it made him wealthy. So now he is not allowed to spread the same message? Please tell us how much money a street artist is allowed to earn before they get put out to pasture.

"when a struggling street artist makes fun of capitalism on a public wall - it holds a message of power to the people". Now go back and look through Wall and Piece. Banksy was indeed aย struggling street artist making fun of capitalism on public walls. And he was so good at it that he became an iconic street artist, and it made him wealthy. So now he is not allowed to spread the same message? Please tell us how much money a street artist is allowed to earn before they get put out to pasture.
The problem is you still think banksy is a street artist a la his early works.
As I get older - I become more bitter and cynical. ย It seems that when a struggling street artist makes fun of capitalism on a public wall - it holds a message of power to the people - but when an uber wealthy established artist who flies around the world on daily painting jaunts publicly criticizes capitalism it falls a bit short. ย Its like a politician tagging the White House and saying politicians have too much power. ย Sometimes it is hard to separate the message from the messenger - ย ย Stop and think about what you are saying here. Yea someone confirmed this to me a few months ago. I was told the Barbican mural was six figures, money well spent by them considering the extra press it gave the exhibition.
