Large Waves/Ripple in Framed Prints, by lg2771 on Mar 16, 2018 23:53:50 GMT 1, I have a large print that has been hanging for a while and I really just noticed that there are pretty large waves and ripples in it. I don’t know how or why but I was wondering if this is a fixable issue.
Thanks!

Large Waves/Ripple in Framed Prints, by quinn on Mar 17, 2018 0:48:41 GMT 1, I've got a couple like this too. Mines are float mounted. I put it down to high humidity levels. The prints are fine. It doesn't bother me too much.

Yeah they were done by a good guy. I’ve had other ones done with no issue. I’m thinking maybe I hung it in a place with high humidity. Maybe it got loosened up and moved around?

Large Waves/Ripple in Framed Prints, by quinn on Mar 17, 2018 1:24:51 GMT 1, Yeh probably is that. The one I've got the most issue with is on a wall that I know isn't great. Had trouble with roof leaking and made the cavity in the wall really damp. I would suggest moving it and see if it flattens out.

Awesome thank you! And if it doesn’t on its own is it a fixable thing?

Large Waves/Ripple in Framed Prints, by Red Barron on Jan 4, 2019 20:09:31 GMT 1, I recognize this thread is a year old but could I ask if you figured out the problem and also a solution? I have noted that several of my prints (both mounted and floated by a “high end” gallery) are showing the same ripple effect. I have moved twice and they were shipped in a container across the ocean so possibly humidity was an issue at some point.
It doesn’t bother me much visually speaking but given the prints have magically increased in value over the years, I am wondering if leaving them as is could cause more damage? Any suggestions/ideas are appreciated in advance!

Any suggestions/ideas are appreciated in advance! Hey there, I actually didn't do anything about it. It's not a super valuable print, a Marilyn from pure evil, so I just didn't want to pay to get it fixed up. I had mine shipped framed, so I think the print actually moved a bit during shipping. That may be what yours is but mine is matted, and I wouldn't think floated it would move, so probably it's humidity. I was told that ripples are easily fixable and not a big deal in comparison to a crease or rip. I think a restorer could fix it quite easily if you wanted to get it straightened out.

Large Waves/Ripple in Framed Prints, by Adam The Collector on Jan 5, 2019 1:14:16 GMT 1, I have had prints flattened. You must send them to a paper conservator to give the print humidity treatments and then put into a press for 6-8 weeks. Should solve the problem.

Large Waves/Ripple in Framed Prints, by gd79 on Jan 5, 2019 20:12:24 GMT 1, This will surely be sucking eggs advice to most, but aside from damp one of the most common causes of rippling is cleaning the glass with windolene or some other spray. The seal at the bottom is not watertight, and the moisture + chemicals can run down and seap into the frame.
The chemicals evaporate .... And boom you have a little greenhouse. Combine this with changing temperatures, central heating and all the rest and your prints will go wavy.
Usually they just flatten out, though I had a silver gelatin photo that ended up with major damage due to this.
So... Only clean the glass with dry cloth, like a sunglasses cloth

Large Waves/Ripple in Framed Prints, by dotdot on Jan 5, 2019 20:33:17 GMT 1, had this happen to a neate i bought framed. (JJ frame)
took it to my framer - he had a look deframed.. sampled the paper for moisture - dried it out re-frame and we're away.
as per usual turn around in this case.. 2 months.
stay cool don't panic and ... carry on.

Large Waves/Ripple in Framed Prints, by 7thson on Jan 13, 2019 0:15:04 GMT 1, Paper can expand/contract, as with any material, depending on the environment of where it is located and the time of year (based on temperature/humidity of the seasons, etc). Taking the framed piece from the frame shop, which is probably (hopefully) a well controlled climate, compared to where it is in your house, can be a big enough difference to cause the print to expand slightly.
If the framer does not leave room for potential expansion, that can cause waves in the print. Not only in terms of the height/width of the opening, but also if the space between the glazing and the back is too close. This is why you when you get a piece back from a professional framer and you are putting it on the wall, you may notice the print moving around a bit. This means the framer left enough room for any expansion.
You may want to check if your print is a bit too snug in the frame. Even the best of the best framers can miss on this every once in a while. There are so many different types of papers, they may underestimate it at times, especially if it is a paper that is less common/they are not as familiar with.

Large Waves/Ripple in Framed Prints, by roy2k on Jan 15, 2019 18:33:52 GMT 1, I had this problem on a print and the only way to fix it is to take it to a paper conservationist in London and pay through the nose for it to be flattened. It's worth having it done though.

Large Waves/Ripple in Framed Prints, by firstimer on Mar 11, 2019 9:55:09 GMT 1, Just the thread I'm looking for. Before I purchase - can someone give me advice on if these waves/ripples can be easily fixed?
When I asked the gallery about it, their response has been: "The paper waving is caused by the mounting and would disappear without remains if taken off of the supporting cardboard. There is no damage here."
Does this mean if i get it remounted and reframed, I should be good? It's a fairly large print. About 50" x50".
