Do I accept the 85K or go to auction?....... And if so, which auction house? Under no circumstances should you sell it at auction, you won't get anywhere near as much money. Try Joseph Fine Art, they pay well or use an auction house that can arrange a private sale.

Banksy โข Girl With Red Balloon Print, by t3c on Sept 15, 2016 15:58:45 GMT 1, take the 85K all day long and then invest it in a rental property if you already own your own home
it's a pretty piece of paper, and iconic one for sure but nothing more than that...bricks & mortar all the way when you've got that kind of paper to play with imho

I keep questioning what I should do with the 4 pretty bits of paper I have under the bed. Is having paper on the walls (or not on the walls in my case) better than having a chunk off the mortgage, a rental property or a 2nd hand lambo ??!!

Banksy โข Girl With Red Balloon Print, by lee3 on Sept 15, 2016 16:23:44 GMT 1, Thank you to those of you that have sent the helpful and constructive comments on this thread and via PM. Do I accept the 85K or go to auction?....... And if so, which auction house? As others have said, there is almost no way the arithmetic can work out in your favor by pushing it to auction. For example: 85 in hand vs. 70% net at auction (assuming 25% buyers fee and 5% seller which you would be able to get with ease for a piece like that) is an equivalent auction price with premium of ~120k+. And if you're a good arm wrestler and negotiate all of the sellers fee away and only had to subtract the 25% buyers premium, you would still need to achieve a price with premium of ~113k gbp to equate to your 85 net. I could be wrong, but as others have mentioned I can not see any reasonable scenario where your Girl With Balloon edition 150 exceeds 113k at auction at this point in time. You would be left to hoping that two inebriated auctiongoers with more money than time each decided they had to have it that night and that's not a wise bet.

You can buy four Warhol Soup Can signed prints for that, or if Banksy (and investment) is your thing you'd be better placed selling and buying four CYWs Question ... if you are going to keep the money in art and Banksy in particular, why would you diversify into a print that hasn't appreciated at the same rate as Girl With Balloon (and yes I understand past performance is not indicative of future returns). If you can buy four CYWs for the price of one GWB today, what would cause the market to continue to value Banksy, but have GWB become less valuable relative to Choose Your Weapon ? I ask as a genuinely interested person, not to needle or mock.

If you are not even enjoying them on your wall, I'd snap insta turbo sell them if they are worth that much. You might die tomorrow or next week or next year. Do something with your money that you enjoy RIGHT NOW.

I don't think GWB will ever become less valuable than CYW, I just think that GWB is at pretty scary heights right now and I'm struggling to see it going much higher for a while whereas I can see CYW's appreciating at a much faster rate. For example I can see GWB remaining at the current level, give or take, in the next few years but I can see CYW's appreciating by 50-100%. If the latter happens you turn your ยฃ80k sales price on the GWB into four CYWs with an aggregate value worth ยฃ160k. Clearly this is all personal opinion and speculation...

Banksy โข Girl With Red Balloon Print, by Pattycakes on Sept 15, 2016 23:48:28 GMT 1, Thank you to those of you that have sent the helpful and constructive comments on this thread and via PM. Do I accept the 85K or go to auction?....... And if so, which auction house? Whilst you might get ยฃ85 or so at auction if you're very lucky, you will never get anywhere near that as an estimate. You'll need to be thinking ยฃ40-60k with a reserve of about 35. If fortune shines upon you sure you might hit 85k or so, but with fees you'll lose about 10% of that to the house.
If you really have been offered 85k take the money and run. That is a great offer and one you'll struggle to increase trying to sell it on your own. Dealers make a percentage on what they buy from you because they have a network of clients who will pay a premium to buy from them, you do not. As a good friend once told me "don't be greedy pigs get eaten"
The market is hot right now, but it can cool just as quickly as it heated up, don't think you're cleverer than the market, you're not. If someone wants to give you what equates to 3 times the average annual UK salary for a piece of paper from an edition of 150 do the smart thing and take the money.

You can search forum archives and find similar "take the money and run" posts going back over 10 years ago when similar pieces were trading at a fraction of where they are now. Unless supply dramatically increases or demand somehow drops off a cliff, you can expect them to continue to appreciate, possibly not at the same rate, but upward non the less. True it's just a piece a paper and a $179 million Picasso is just a stretch of canvas...Gotta love those analogies. The average annual salary comparison is even better and equally irrelevant lol. Don't be coerced by flawed and uniformed reasoning. Do what you feel is best.

Banksy โข Girl With Red Balloon Print, by gorkie on Sept 16, 2016 2:00:30 GMT 1, I personally think there is nowhere but up for a signed, red GWB. Banksy is in a league of his own in terms of his class of artwork and GWB is arguably his most recognized and sought after image. And red is the only color that really matters IMO. I would not sell it if I were you unless you truly need the funds. When Banksy is dead and gone, what print are people going to covet the most from him?
A red, signed GWB.
My 2 cents.

You may be right, but bear this in mind, these prints are not rare, there are 150 of them signed and 600 unsigned, and they are now at a level where they compete in price with top end Warhol and Lichtenstein editions. When the crash comes, and it will, history tends to dictate that it takes a very long time for prices to recover (if at all).

Banksy โข Girl With Red Balloon Print, by gorkie on Sept 16, 2016 5:23:06 GMT 1, 150 signed is nothing. And who knows how many of them have even survived in truly collectible condition.
My guess is maybe 75% of them.
A signed, red GWB is a truly rare thing. Saying they are not is simply false. How many people are there in the world who would love to have one? And how many are there? It's not rocket science.

150 signed, 600 unsigned is an enormous print run by historical standards.
People paying current Banksy print prices will, fact, lose their asses. It may not be tomorrow, might be in 5 years, but that ass gone.
A bubble is a bubble is a bubble. Just because people call it out for what it is when it's only 1/2 its end size, doesn't mean they are wrong. Just stick around and you'll see it pop.
You may be right, but bear this in mind, these prints are not rare, there are 150 of them signed and 600 unsigned, and they are now at a level where they compete in price with top end Warhol and Lichtenstein editions. Banksy โข Girl With Red Balloon Print, by Howard Johnson on Sept 16, 2016 7:15:16 GMT 1, Personally I think there's no way that GWB remains stable at 100k, or at least appriciates significantly any further. All one needs to do is compare it to Warhol's "Marilyn" edition. Both are the most iconic multiples of the most iconic artists of thier generations. Marilyns sell for 100k, and while the more desirable colors go for more, they are still in the same ballpark price point.
Marilyn was published almost 50 years ago. GWB was published 12 years ago. Warhol's legacy is written in stone as the most influential contemporary artist. Banksy's legacy is unknown. He has had an amazing career, but little formal institutional or critical support. We all love banksy, but at the end of the day can anyone really say that his prices will surpass Warhol? At some point there simply has to be a ceiling.
in other words, take the money.

i'd rather not get caught up in the price discussion around this image - but for the benefit of anyone searching you need to check the condition very carefully, sellers will attempt to pass anything off as "mint" I doubt the full edition of 600 Unsigned & 150 signed still exists for this image - During my own search I've seen all sorts of condition issues - including prints that had been stuck down with "copydex" adhesive & pritt stick glue. Some have been cleaned up - you need to hold them up to the light - not just look at them laid out on a table, as there can be paper loss - such that you can see thru areas of the print when you hold it up, the paper is so thin.

Banksy โข Girl With Red Balloon Print, by Poster Bob on Sept 16, 2016 8:31:38 GMT 1, As an art asset a signed GWB is almost unparalled in terms of potential. I think that selling one at all would always be looked at as a mistake in hindsight.

Banksy โข Girl With Red Balloon Print, by njr911 on Sept 16, 2016 9:47:52 GMT 1, The advice is sound. Sell the GWB but also keep your GWB, as no one has a clue what's going to happen in the future both with the market or with an individuals circumstances
And this is why I've not sold my pretty pieces of paper, I'm risk averse so don't want to sell and miss the opportunity of further increase, they have doubled in value in the last 18 months. On a 2nd hand Lambo value is only going one way, I see the housing rental market as minimal returns so what better place is there for a medium term investment ??

Banksy โข Girl With Red Balloon Print, by Deleted on Sept 16, 2016 10:01:21 GMT 1, well, not much more to add to this as everyone has had their say.
But, I will make a bet. The below print, and its edition-mates, will be substantially more valuable than a signed Girl with Balloon within the next 3 years, with it going up whilst the Banksy drops.
Wayne Thiebaud Display Rows lithograph in colors, hand-worked by the artist, on wove paper, 1990, signed in pencil, inscribed along the lower sheet edge Color Trial proof of "Display Rows" Lithograph - Hand-worked with watercolor published by Campbell-Thiebaud Gallery, San Francisco Edition of 60 with various proofs Image: 28 ยพ x 22 7/8 in. (730 x 581 mm.) Sheet: 37 ยพ x 29 ยฝ in. (959 x 749 mm.)
This will be the 'is mose/m909 an idiot' test.
