While violent crime has increased in London, I really dislike these sensationalist stories. In the main, London is a very safe place to live. Crime stats are complex and need significant analysis but it’s rare that journalists actually do that.

London , by Dibbs 45 on Jun 16, 2018 10:19:57 GMT 1, There are a number of factors that contribute to this increase in violence. Especially with knife enabled crime and moped robberies.
For a start this has been going on for a long time. The spike recently is because it has increased and cut backs to the Police is a major factor, but more so in the way they are expected to police. Equally the LAS (London ambulance service) are stretched which means getting to those injured becomes a factor.
The police are frowned upon if they stop and search, unless the grounds are as such that they can see a knife in someone’s hand or drugs. Evasive answers or suspicion is not enough grounds. Also police are relunctant to engage with youths when five have their cameras out to stick on you tube later. Of course if the practice is questionable then rightly so. However some footage is edited for FB to get support.
Kids carry knifes for defence and most know that they won’t be searched, so in a school fights/ or area disputes for instance it can have dire consequences as the red most sets in.
Social media and gang initiation and blackmail also has a lot to do with it.
I used to do lectures in youth clubs on knife crime in Hackney and most youthes were bored until they saw gory photos of injuries. I struggled to get the point across.
However all this said London is safe as it’s vast. But like everywhere you have to be vigilant. You can live in London for years and never see any crime.

Very interesting insights Dibbs. Just for ‘fun’, I took the data of violent crime rates in Bath which is a chocolate box type of image and compared with London over past five years. Most people would be surprised that the rates are very similar. In fact violent crime across the population over a decent length of time is uncannily similar.
