Damien Hirst H4 • Veils, by Deleted on Sept 7, 2018 15:55:40 GMT 1, You are missing the important point, i.e. that pre-orders can get delayed and take ages to actually fulfil. If you buy a pre-order item 180 days before the seller even gets it himself then you have no way of getting your money back if the seller suddenly disappears off the face of the earth. I know someone who lost almost $1,000 in exactly that situation. EBay doesn't actually support preorders, it has a dispatch time from purchase which is maxed at 30 working days. If the seller sets the dispatch time to be over a certain period of time then a warning is displayed on the product page warning the buyer of an extended period of time before dispatch. If the seller exceeds that period then the buyer can open a case with EBay which is heavily weighted towards the purchaser. They will refund the buyer even if they cannot retrieve the money from the seller since PayPal will guarantee any sale using Paypal. Here is the EBay page on the topic - www.ebay.com/help/policies/listing-policies/presale-listings-policy?id=4252 That's good to know but anyone buying a Tate Hirst print off e-bay is going to have to wait much longer than 30 days for it. Both sellers and buyers know that.

True, but that makes all listings against EBay’s policies and should be removed. In this case buyers are actually more protected and the sellers are the vulnerable ones.

Damien Hirst H4 • Veils, by Deleted on Sept 7, 2018 15:59:57 GMT 1, You are missing the important point: anyone who has lost out because they didn't file a complaint within 180 days has gone full fu*king retard. An intelligent buyer in such a situation would tell the seller that they need to get a refund and will then resend the funds to allow for a new 180 day window. So, anyone who lost money in such a situation is a Timmy. You are missing the important point, i.e. that pre-orders can get delayed and take ages to actually fulfil. The buyer couldn't make a claim before the 180 days are up because the item had not been sent to the seller within that time frame. ...or easier still, don't buy from flippers in the first place.

Damien Hirst H4 • Veils, by Chris JL on Sept 7, 2018 19:37:24 GMT 1, Anyone else seen Raffles in person. Thoughts?
I did, and liked it a lot. My personal favourites in the flesh were, in order, Clariges, Raflles, Plaza and Camino real (while based on the pdf my favourites were the smaller dots ones of both background colours). The diasec mounting works better with the white background than with the black one: in the former case it increases contrast, making the image punchier, while in the latter it reduces it a bit (since reflections lighten the background). Obviously the effect of reflections cannot be seen in the pdf. That’s also why with the black background my preferences are reversed: ie smaller dots (hence less black background) are better than bigger dots in this case (I think this might be the reason why no larger dot prints with black background were produced - they would have looked significantly duller in real lighting scenarios).
I moved my office to the Tate members’ room on the release day, so I looked at them A LOT in various light conditions during the day 😊. And keep in mind that there the lights are professionally designed, so one can’t do much better at home for managing the effect of reflections on contrast. The above being said, I liked them all - really.

That, combined with him having to pay full price have him on the fence. I'm trying to convince him to just go for it. When I looked at it last night, it seemed that the spots were darker in color than the others. Is that true?

Darker? I haven’t noticed, and I don’t think so tbh. They had hanged H5 3 to 6 by each other, and the tryptic 4 to 5 had a perfectly matching dynamic range to the named eye - they looked actually designed to hang by each other in a very smooth transition (with obviously bigger dots/more white background having a spectrum shifted to the lighter side). H5 3 and, obviously, the smaller dots, have a much more clustered spectrum toward the dark tones (naturally).
Not sure my jargon makes much sense (used to be a photographer, sorry), but basically in pure terms of colours there aren’t darker/lighter prints, but white background ones are obviously perceived lighter than dark background, and among these smaller dots appear darker (due to less white). And yes, the photog that made the pdf did a very crappy job to be honest.
I should have brought a real camera and put the images in photoshop to check the DR formally - maybe next time 😊

Damien Hirst H4 • Veils, by bjoern on Sept 8, 2018 9:15:19 GMT 1, I went to the private view in order to secure for myself a Raffles, which I thought is the strongest piece of this edition. After I saw them in the flesh, I ended up ordering my absolute favorites Beverly Hills & Savoy, since they are imo a more new, unique Hirst and distinguish more from the spot paintings. They belong together as a diptych and I am really happy Heni allocated me with my preferred choices...
But all H5s are great & look stunning in the flesh. Congratulations!

Were there black background with large spots paintings? If so, my money of why they are not among the prints is that the reflections of diasec would not work for them.
