Why would BNG start the run before contracts were signed? They prob knew some other gallery would jump on this guy if they knew about him.
A pretty easy answer to this. In the 6 1/2 years, we have owned BNG, we have never had an issue like it before and most of the time, unless its some sort of license that requires it, the artists we work with us trust us enough not to have a contract. We tend to pay artists and printers right away. I know it might be a crazy idea to some but we actually take care of everyone that works with us. We are the last on the totem pole.
There definitely was some miscommunication on that release. 99% of the above list in the other post is accurate. The only thing that isn't is that we never advertised his print in the mystery tube. It was just added in there because on top of numbered prints, we put in test proofs, printer proofs, etc. Plus it was mentioned to him we would be doing it and I got the ok.
When I discovered his work, I did not print his prints because I was afraid some gallery would know about him. It was just the typical process we have where I didn't expect something to change the moment we were going to send the prints.
Either way, it worked out for the best. His work seemed to get around our Phish market that got the print in the tube and now hes doing amazing. I personally would love to have given it another shot but I get it. You seriously learn a lot in this business and I definitely did from this experience. I really wish him luck though. Definitely a nice guy.

I imagine the brush strokes are incredible up close and then you step back and the illusions of the painting take you to another place. This painter is very talented. Does anyone know if any other galleries outside of China represent Shang Chengxiang or is he just based in China?
I've yet to deal with China on any art... One would imagine he could become a superstar in Asia and then make his way to Europe and the Americas?
