I wanted to see how you guys document what you have in their collection.
Recently I decided to make a spreadsheet of my collection (about 50 pieces total). It was a fun activity that let me evaluate a few things about my collection. Also, if there was ever a fire or major damage I now at least have it somewhat documented. I need to figure out if you can add an image link to excel.
I set it up with Artist, Artwork, Medium, Edition, Year, Purchase Location, and Purchase Price. Any other suggested categories? I was going to do a Current Value, but I know I would just over estimate everything so I didn't end up adding it.
On a side note, seeing it all together its very clear a couple artists make up the majority of the collection. One artist makes up about 30% of the collection. I have about about 15 of her prints and one original painting. Though I enjoy having all those prints, there are only a couple that are framed and on the walls. I have been weighing the pros and cons of selling the majority of them and putting that towards another original painting from that artist. Others gone though the same? I have a MUCH harder time selling a piece than I do buying one!

I think I will get in touch with the artist about buying a new original, and then I will have a goal with how much I need to raise. Maybe this will be the push I need to sell some pieces. I suppose its not always about quantity.....

Who is the artist in question?

I had the same idea recently about selling smaller pieces and prints to by a few originals. Sold a few prints... But also bought a few new ones!!

Bikes owned = n + 1 (Where n = the current number of bikes)
Simples

Art spreadsheet., by ab3 on Jul 6, 2018 15:21:29 GMT 1, Its a really useful thing to do just for insurance purposes. I've had mine listed for years, but just a list in a spreadsheet by artist and work below and price paid and what it's currently worth in the market place at replacement value.
Nice keeping a record. I also have photos of all the work stored online on my google drive incase there is a fire and everything goes up in smoke, at least there is a record of it in the cloud.

But Airtable is a good free online solution. It looks and works like a spreadsheet, bit it's built more like a database. Here you can save images and invoices for each work and all other info you desire.

Art spreadsheet., by pada1 on Jan 27, 2019 14:41:34 GMT 1, I built my own excel spreadsheet with a bunch of indicators to indeed know better my habits and how I evolved as a collector for the past few years. I have also put some VBA into it to get automatically prices from Expressobeans. However they don't have much price updates, especially for the art released years ago. Would anyone recommend a good source of prices, ideally public/free?
I checked Airtable on Gard 's recommendation. Very nice tool. Thinking to switch to it, as it makes the list more mobile and nice looking Thanks!

And you can set it up to get alerts whenever a piece that you have marked comes up for sale or sales. expressobeans has a "wanted" section and you can get ebay alerts for auctions (and you can get trade alerts of other members that post it "for sale/trade"). however, ebay alerts only show up if a user enters it into the expressobeans listing.
EB also keeps track of ebay sales (as long as they are user entered). they don't track auction houses but members can enter them themselves.
