Print flattening service in the US, by shmiggysmalls777 on Jul 11, 2018 8:55:17 GMT 1, Hello UAA, I hope you guys are having a great one! I have 2 questions, hopefully someone in this forum can answer my questions.
I’m in search of a company that professionally flattens prints within the United States and ships it flat once the process is complete. I’m about to pull the trigger on a large print, 54in x 36in, that’s been rolled in a tube for roughly 7-8 years. Due to the size of the print, my local conservationist does not feel comfortable taking on the task. If a member can point me in the right direction, it’d be immensely appreciated!
The print also has hand embellishments on the border of the print that were drawn with a pencil. Will these embellishments possibly schmear in the flattening process? I’ve heard that the flattening process requires moisture and machinery. The last thing I want is for these embellishments to be ruined in the flattening process. If that’s the case, I will naturally flatten the print out between glassine sheets and acid free foam boards overtime!
Thank you!

Print flattening service in the US, by wottagunn on Jul 11, 2018 10:39:29 GMT 1, Poster Mountain.
Never used them myself (I'm in Australia) but have heard nothing but praise. I actually emailed them about a year ago in regards to a creased print I had intended to purchase, and sent them photos of it asking if it could be repaired. I quickly received a very detailed email back with all pricing including (approx). They included a lot more information than I expected.

Print flattening service in the US, by jkesquire on Jul 11, 2018 14:25:18 GMT 1, I'd look into Alvarez Conservation in NYC. I used them to repair a print and flatten it, and they were great. I'm not sure about shipping, but it's worth giving them a call. Good luck

Print flattening service in the US, by Mister Whisper on Jul 12, 2018 9:09:58 GMT 1, I'll second Poster Mountain. I've used them before to flatten a roll-creased Petrol Bomb, so I can personally recommend them. Here's an example of their work flattening a silkscreen from their blog: postermountain.blogspot.com/2012/01/by-popular-demand-lost-silkscreen.html
I'm pretty sure they can preserve embellishments during the process, but drop 'em an email to be sure.
They're located in Northridge, so if you happen to live in SoCal you can save on shipping (which is going to cost a lot in oversize fees for a 36x54 shipped flat) by dropping off and picking up.

Thanks for the link misterwhisper, that gave me the hope I needed! I wish I lived in the California area to cut out the shipping costs but it is what’s it is. Hopefully they feel comfortable enough to ship that large of a print flat 🤞🏼
