Banksy • Trolley Hunters, by Jamo on Oct 19, 2007 10:53:00 GMT 1, JD - thank you for providing this screen shot of the forthcoming Banksy page - it is a useful training tool for my 13 year old son who is F5ing for me this week and next (he has 2 weeks off school before any of you report me). I explained in detail how the page will look, signed vs.unsigned, etc. but this has done the trick nicely and I am even more confident that he is fully trained and ready to confidently 'add to basket'. As they say in Tesco's, every little helps....' JAMO

Banksy • Trolley Hunters, by Jef Aerosol on Oct 19, 2007 12:01:47 GMT 1, I understand nothing to this "trolley" story ! I've already seen this picture before, so it isn't new, is it ? I think it is in Banksy's book that i saw it. Is it another similar pic you are talking about or a re-issue of a print of this pic ?

I think it is in Banksy's book that i saw it. Is it another similar pic you are talking about or a re-issue of a print of this pic ? Short story: Trolley hunters was released with five other prints in LA at last years "Barely Legal". But only 100 unsigned of each was sold out of 500 (+ 150 signed). POW should have released the rest before christmas last year, but so far only Grannies, Applause and Morons have been released. It was said on the POW homepage that Trollies will be released "later this month" ie October. Although the actual image / idea of trollies has been flying about for a couple of years ( 3 or 4) it has been on the banksy site for a while and appeared in skatches and one of the black books, its an old banksy image thats finally seeing the light of day ( hopefully )

The Titifreak prints were split up in terms of release. The Morons prints were too, weren't they?

Banksy • Trolley Hunters, by Jef Aerosol on Oct 19, 2007 14:21:44 GMT 1, It's incredible how fan you are ! How can a piece of paper have such an effect ? lol !!! I feel like an E.T. ! (I have to confess that i have never seen a Banksy print for real yet and have only seen one banksy on a wall : the maid in Camden, near Cecil Sharp House, where i pasted up my Sid Vicious in july 2006 and my Hendrix in july 2007 ! ) I only know him thru the book "wall and piece" that I bought last year and thru the internet... I walked a lot around Brick Lane and Shoreditch, around Portobello and Camden, in Soho too, but never saw any other Banksy ! And I don't think he ever did anything in France, never saw any here. Didn't see any anywhere else... (Belgium, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Holland...) I was talking on the phone a minute ago with a french guy who's been a real street art fan since the early 80s (he has tons of photos taken in France, Belgium, Portugal and Spain) and I told him about this forum... When i said Banksy, he said : who ? He had never heard of him... It's incredible how this man can be a real cult over there in the UK and is still totally unknown here on this side of the Channel... I guess it must be because we have an older street stencil history here. Makes me remember when i stencilled my selfportrait in London (especially in Soho) in 1985 and we got caught by the cops. The friend I was with spent the night in a cell whereas I escaped... But we had to meave the country on the following day... At that time, there wasn't any stencil in London while we had had lots in France for already 4 years or so... I don't know how this can be explained at all...

Banksy • Trolley Hunters, by melmoth on Oct 19, 2007 14:28:11 GMT 1, Banksy just got a big jolt of publicity over here in the US due to the Pitt/Jolie purchases. Not sure how many US speculators it's added to the process, but it's probably notched getting one up another degree of difficulty.

Yes, i did ! But it's funny how England seems to be another world for him ! (he doesn't speak the language and is much more a "man of the south")... He gave me a CD with lots of stuff from the 80s, I'll add them to my flickr some day... (he isn't into internet at all !!!) He exhibits his photos sometimes and he's a painter too (but nothing to do with street art !), his name is Paul Vianet. I suggested he should publish a book with his "vintage" pictures...
there are lots of other photographers over here who spend their time taking pics of street art : Gérard Faure, Vito, Michel Longhi, Tofz4u, Gérard Laurent (Oncle Tom), Roswitha Guillemin, Thierry Geffray, etc... They have thousands of photos of stencils... Michel has a reference site : "paris-pochoirs" www.parispochoirs.com/galerie/category.php?cat=75&start=60 But the site hasn't been updated for quite a while... Thierry's site : www.chez.com/lesmursmurs/ Roswitha has a nice site too (mail art & street art) www.roswitha-guillemin.com/index.htm Oncle Tom also has a site : www.lapanse.com/lapanse.html

If your friend hasn't heard of Banksy then i'm afraid he's not much of a street art fan and probably hasn't been for 5 years or so...Banksy is single handedly responsible for the resurgence of interest in using the stencil as a valid form of art, this interest has led people to look at the history of the format which has naturally taken them to Blek Le Rat and the early french scene that you were part of. Banksy has inspired a generation of street artists in much the same way that Shep Fairey has done in the states and as Blek did in Paris the early 80's. It's not so much the doing it, but touching something in people that inspires them to have a go to. It's this that has made Banksy the phenomenon that he is. The gift of ideas :-) I think the socio-political content and the humour of the work caught the imagination of the public, not just the "stencil", which of course has been around for ever. The Banksy humour is a particular British phenomenon, dark and a bit twisted and a little self depreciating, whilst being ironic and smart at the same time. This has also crossed over to the states recently, British comedy is doing amazingly well over there, they discovered Irony, ha ha, the post Seinfeld generation ... maybe it's the war, the state of politics, the laughable nature of Bush, Fox News, Blair, Iran, Suicide bombers, cynical coppers, mixed up with CCTV, Idol, Big Brother, Come Dancing, and vacuous "celebrity" everything, whatever.. but it could only have happened now and never in the 80's.
Many things have conspired to allow us this defining moment in art history and pop culture...probably impossible to understand "why"...I'm just really glad it happened when it did, cos to be honest, before Banksy.. I was getting really f**king BORED of EVERYTHING. ;D ;D ;D
