Good effort by Jerry Saltz, even if lacking detail and miniature in scale โ the Wool original on metal being 7' x 6'.
$26,485,000 for the latter, at Christie's New York in November 2013:
Christopher Wool (B. 1955) Apocalypse Now signed, titled, numbered and dated 'APOCALYPSE NOW (P.50) WOOL 1988' (on the reverse) alkyd and flashe on aluminum and steel 84 x 72 in. (213.4 x 182.9 cm.) Painted in 1988.
www.christies.com/lotfinder/Lot/christopher-wool-b-1955-apocalypse-now-5739095-details.aspx
__________
As a separate point, the synchronicity of Criminal Mischief's post and mine, followed within hours by Saltz's Instagram photo, is also amusing.
While I'm in no way superstitious, this afternoon might just be a good time for someone here to buy a lottery ticket.

Canvas matches the Original. Could still have used that stecil to make it. Just a bit more work.

itโs a stencil. You can paint parts of it and move it around to part other parts. It doesnโt have to match up.

Harland or kaws, by Chris JL on Aug 18, 2018 14:15:53 GMT 1, How these two can be considered substitutable goods baffles me.
And how the choice is framed as a selection between โbrands,โ rather than between two competing artworks one might have fallen in love with, sounds actually very demeaning to both.
Honestly, just get a Patek Philippe instead. Or if you fear your buddies wonโt recognise it, go for a Rolex.

itโs a stencil. You can paint parts of it and move it around to part other parts. It doesnโt have to match up.
I understand that.
However, I'd think it would be easier to incorporate the right spacing into the stencil from the beginning, rather than moving it around during painting.
Also, as avec art noted above, there are other elements in the painting that don't match up to the stencil.

Also, as avec art noted above, there are other elements in the painting that don't match up to the stencil. that would make sense but thereโs probably a reason heโs an art critic and not an artist. No way to know if that was the actual stencil used to make that piece. If he did use it then he may have gone over the finished piece to try and make it look closer to the original.
Either way, at the end of the day, does anyone really care about the replica stencil paintings an art critic made?
