WK | Shepard Fairey at MMOMA, by Chris JL on Sept 6, 2018 22:27:33 GMT 1, Shep just missed a chance to do something meaningful in Russia...
A cute Lenin from 2002 is all he has to say in the face of an oppressive regime that kills journalists and political opponents, oppresses its people, robs its elderly, cooks domestic and foreign elections, and commits endless crimes within and outside the country?
As much as I like his work, I really want to forget this print and catalogue: shameful, really, for an โactivistโ artist.
Which artists are left that walk the talk?
Very disappointed. Shep might be just another phoney after all.

WK | Shepard Fairey at MMOMA, by viz on Sept 7, 2018 7:11:45 GMT 1, Honestly I wouldn't have expected a release against Putin or Russia... critizing, as he does, the so called west world from within is still something much different and well accepted by the system itself... for sure he could have made a generic print about rights not granted...moreover the print is mainly addressed to the west market, it would be much more interesting to see which works will be included in the exhibition.
That said, I'm surprised the print is still available, I think you cannot get a print the same size and edition (description says 90, on the picture is numbered 75) for less than that, and the subject is a classic old style Obey. Moreover it's one of the few prints released in collaboration with a gallery and associated with a big museum exhibition.

WK | Shepard Fairey at MMOMA, by Chris JL on Sept 7, 2018 8:13:14 GMT 1, viz Iโm actually not surprised that this is still available. For many of his collectors, the political element of his work does matter a lot. And from that standpoint, this all Moscow thing looks like a big sham - including having the release not even advertised on the obey giant portal (maybe for self awareness?) but only available on a for profit gallery website (quite odd to be honest).

WK | Shepard Fairey at MMOMA, by viz on Sept 7, 2018 9:30:02 GMT 1, His IG post about the Moscow exhibition had the same number of likes (for what that matters..) as any other one.
IMHO he's not like BLU and not even Banksy, his art is political in the kind of way that the system allows it to be. He's against capitalism (...), he's pro free speech, green economy, pro human rights, against war...often in a quite generic way. Although I like what he does and consider him one of the most important living artists, and agree with most of what he supports and says I always found his art to be quite mild from a political point of view... but I'm not in the US, so my point of view might not be focused ...was he ever censored? did he ever create a social or political scandal with one of his works? if he did I cannot remember. His attitude is mainly positive on issues, trying to support what he believes it's right. That's good, but political, or subversive, art stands somewhere else.

Based on interviews I've heard, I'd imagine that he's against the inequalities the system creates and inequalities in general. I think it was a slow sellout because it wasnt publicized on his IG is all. Also, it didn't have an image of a lady, which seems to be a big buying point for many.

Yes, as you say, he's against the most advanced and uncontrolled forms of capitalism and the inequalities that come with that, as I guess almost everyone. Actually what I mainly wanted to say is just that I don't find his message to be very subversive or scathing, although he stands for what I believe are very good principles and ideas.

Well i thought the oppposite... I think his Soviet propaganda posters are his best work, and this is a large format low edition version of an excellent old print. So i'm very happy to have got one, and much more so than if it was a picture of a random hot girl with pretty patterns behind her.

WK | Shepard Fairey at MMOMA, by Chris JL on Oct 30, 2018 13:09:11 GMT 1, Visited the show. The retrospective is good to be honest, with tons of works that I really like (and several that are even on my walls).
Nevertheless, viewed from Moscow itโs a missed chance at best, or an act of complicity at worst. One gets out of the show with the feeling that the Kremlinโs thugs and thieves rhetoric is spot on: โthe s*** that we have over here is no worse than the s*** that they have over there,โ and thatโs as false as a $7 bill.
Baseline: SF landed a hand (willingly or not) to the local criminal regime. All the people I went with (Russian or otherwise) had this same exact feeling.
(And not to mention that an Obey face with Putinโs stare would have been perfect ๐ - a missed opportunity)

Focusing for this purpose on the pictured image, my feelings are ambivalent.
The Lengiz advertising poster reference seems too easy for me. It feels like a cop-out clichรฉ. At the same time, Shepard Fairey was pretty much duty-bound to give an express nod to Constructivists like Rodchenko and the direct influence they've had on his work.
Separately, while the portrait overall is aesthetically pleasing, the stencil cutting wasn't the greatest. Loss of definition around the brow, cheekbones and jawline have made the features of Mayakovsky noticeably less chiselled than they were in reality.
That said, as far as early Soviet icons go, I don't think many choices exist that are cooler (or politically safer) than Mayakovsky. For at least a couple of years another lifetime ago, I had this photo on my fridge, shot by Rodchenko as well:
