Hanging a frame with a single nail, by lg2771 on Aug 22, 2018 3:55:59 GMT 1, My friend texted me and said he didn’t have any picture hooks so he just hung up his framed print with a single nail and the wire. He said it’s plaster so the nail will stay in. I told him that it could easily fall off and told him to redo it and get hooks. Can he leave it as is or am I right?
(At this point it’s more I don’t care about his frame I want to be right)

Hanging a frame with a single nail, by ca on Aug 22, 2018 4:38:51 GMT 1, depends what size and weight, overall best practice would say he's about to wakeup with a broken frame on the ground but if it's a really small piece it could very well stay in place for some time

Hanging a frame with a single nail, by silvermyn on Aug 22, 2018 8:36:28 GMT 1, Agreed. It depends on a number of things including (i) the type of plaster, (ii) the size of the nail and (iii) the weight of the frame.
For example, I live in a Victorian house that has lime plaster on the walls about 20mm thik. It's over 100 years old and crumbles. I would definately not hang anything on it using only a nail.

Hanging a frame with a single nail, by galaxy01 on Aug 22, 2018 10:56:44 GMT 1, Single picture hooks will hold like 20kg but you wouldnt trust one on its own with a 5kg museum glass frame, you would want 2 of the bigger hooks that would hold 100kg. Even then, if your wall is plasterboard (which he may mean, as all walls have plaster on unless they are bare brick), plasterboard will tear with enough weight on it if no brick directly behind it, rendering any form of picture hook useless if the nail tears it. You can get special plaster board hooks which clamp the plasterboard behind in the cavity.
If it is like 5mm of plaster over brick, then a single nail (assuming at least 1cm into the brick) should hold most small glass frames or larger perspex ones no problem. But I would always suggest a picture hook, or a screw and wall plug to be safer.

Hanging a frame with a single nail, by Deleted on Aug 22, 2018 11:07:31 GMT 1, If people hate all the hassle of nails and hooks and wall plugs etc. etc. then I can recommend Command picture hanging strips. I use them for just about everything these days and they say you can use them for up to 5.4kg weight. Recommended.

Hanging a frame with a single nail, by lg2771 on Aug 23, 2018 16:14:14 GMT 1, Don’t want to start another thread so hopefully someone sees this. Does anyone have a link to buy the little pads that protect the back of the frame? Mine just fell off.

I think I got 100 of them for under a fiver from The Range (I think they're intended for the legs of furniture, but do the same job).
