Slight Dent in Canvas. Repairable?, by lg2771 on Aug 27, 2018 0:57:04 GMT 1, Hello. I just got a lovely canvas work and it came with a little dent on the outer edge. It’s not really worth making a fuss to the artist or returning because it doesn’t impact the image at all and is hard to noice unless you’re insane like I am. I was just wondering if dents on canvas are repairable. I’ll post a picture shortly. Thanks

I think that this might disappear with a little time. Hang the canvas and revisit the situation in a few weeks.

I’ve had it for about a month now. Is this something that might take a year or should it have flattened out by now? Thanks for the help.

I flipped it over to see and it looked normal to me. I don’t really know what I’m doing in regards to fixing art so I try not to meddle too much.

Slight Dent in Canvas. Repairable?, by Express Post on Aug 27, 2018 2:41:22 GMT 1, If you wanted to get to the bottom of it, you'd have to unstretch the canvas.
Right now it seems like you have better things to do with your time.
I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Yeah I’m not too bothered. I really just wanted to know down the road if it’s fixable. But from your post it sounds like it is.

By frame do you mean the wood paneling the canvas is attached to?

Slight Dent in Canvas. Repairable?, by fonebone45 on Aug 27, 2018 17:21:56 GMT 1, It looks like it's just a small dent in the stretcher bar. Also it's barely noticeable, and on the back it looks like, so who cares?

Slight Dent in Canvas. Repairable?, by fonebone45 on Aug 27, 2018 17:24:21 GMT 1, Oh just realized that's paint on the left side there...ok so it's not the back. Still looking like a divot in the bar itself, or just not fully tight canvas.
If you wanted to tighten it just take out the staple/nails above and or below, pull the canvas tighter, and restaple.

Slight Dent in Canvas. Repairable?, by fonebone45 on Aug 27, 2018 17:26:31 GMT 1, The more I'm looking at it, the more it looks like the artist used canvas that they didn't store rolled, but folded, and it had a little crease in it. (I've got some being store like that now I'm intending on stretching soon. Just need to iron it first)

If it is a crease in the canvas, do you know if that’s something a restorer could fix up?

(I've got some being store like that now I'm intending on stretching soon. Just need to iron it first) If it is a crease in the canvas, do you know if that’s something a restorer could fix up? Yeah definitely. Just needs to be pulled tighter. You can also get a spray that helps tighten.
If you run your finger over it and the bar below doesn't feel dented, then it's probably a crease.
Judging by the pic though, if it's a crease you'll just need to pull out the staples in that top corner and pull it tighter.

There’s nothing television can’t fix. Although this dent has turned me into the narrator from tell tale heart in short time.

Slight Dent in Canvas. Repairable?, by Happy Go Lucky Chap on Aug 27, 2018 22:43:41 GMT 1, That is really barely noticeable, but a framer once showed me a quick trick of the trade. Give it a quick blast with a hairdryer and it will stretch out.
Please post a photo if it works :-)

Slight Dent in Canvas. Repairable?, by heller on Aug 27, 2018 22:53:04 GMT 1, This is a non-issue that you should leave alone.
A aerosol spray can foaming glass cleaner works amazing on the verso of a primed canvas to re-tighten a canvas that has been loosened due to heat or has suffered a dent.

Slight Dent in Canvas. Repairable?, by disappointed on Sept 3, 2018 11:11:05 GMT 1, Am I correct in thinking that this is a slight crease to the canvas on the back of the stretcher?
It's not even worth worrying about but, yeah, could very easily be fixed by a restorer. I've removed dents on the face of canvasses with the application of a small amount of water to the reverse and it's worked every time so, for a professional, this would appear to be a very straightforward job.

Slight Dent in Canvas. Repairable?, by Max Beales on Sept 3, 2018 14:03:42 GMT 1, If you're feeling confident just lightly apply water to the dent using a clean paint brush to the front or back, whichever you feel most comfortable. Should flatten out when dry. I've handled canvasses too rough and poked dents in to them and water usually fixes it. Use a clean(cleaned out, clean-ish) brush and clean water and even if it doesn't work there'll be no mark left.
