How much does frame damage devalue prints, by rambo901 on Sept 6, 2018 20:55:30 GMT 1, Recently bought a print on secondary market and debating whether to send it straight back as the reverse is quite badly damaged. It's not even just marked, the reverse is ripped in several areas where it's been removed so it's quite bad.
I wanted to get some thoughts on how much does damage to the reverse only of a print really devalue it?
Cheers

How much does frame damage devalue prints, by iamzero on Sept 6, 2018 21:15:36 GMT 1, I guess it depends on the print and how valuable/ rare it is? Some people wouldn’t be phased probably if it’s a hard to come by piece.

How much does frame damage devalue prints, by Express Post on Sept 12, 2018 6:17:16 GMT 1, Unless disclosed at the start of the transaction, better to send back.
It is rough as guts and you are gonna be thinking about it all the time.

How much does frame damage devalue prints, by iamzero on Sept 12, 2018 6:48:12 GMT 1, Looks like it’s been skinned when framing tape has been removed. I guess if this condition wasn’t mentioned in the purchase then I’d be sending that bad boy back for a refund.

How much does frame damage devalue prints, by Happy Shopper on Sept 12, 2018 8:20:02 GMT 1, Alternatively, if it's a print you really wanted and it was an ok price, and you're getting it reframed anyway, and the damage isn't visible from the front, keep it!
I'm sure most prints that have been reframed have a small amount of damage. Most of the time you'd never see it, or even know it was there!

How much does frame damage devalue prints, by silvermyn on Sept 12, 2018 8:36:18 GMT 1, It's damaged John J. I'd raise a complaint as soon as possible, assuming you weren't told about the condition issues to the back of the print.
Print collectors are a fussy bunch and you won't get a good price for it when you come to sell. Either seek a refund or a discount that you are happy with.
And remember... "they drew first blood".

How much does frame damage devalue prints, by crashwilliams on Sept 12, 2018 12:01:13 GMT 1, This has happened to one of mine - I think the technical term for this is 'skinning' where they take the tape that was there off and it takes a layer of the paper away. I sought some advice from a dealer he suggested it could devalue the print by 10/15%.
I imagine that many many prints will have this issue (or will have it in the future).
Unless you've had your art professionally framed (conservation standard) then I think you'll be surprised by what you can't see behind the actual framing and in the main, the shoddy work that's been done.
