I usually give a quid ot two to an older chap on my route to work. He's a nice guy and I do feel very sorry about his situation.

In England the number of people sleeping rough is a snapshot taken in autumn each year. Councils count or estimate the number of people sleeping rough in their area. Most authorities talk to local agencies and give an estimate.
So the figures we’re using here are only very rough estimates.
Last year, around 4,800 people were estimated to be sleeping rough in England. This is 15% higher than in 2016, and more than double the estimate of 1,800 for 2010.

I wouldn’t suggest pity is a constructive emotion, perhaps compassion? But anyway, yes clearly you shouldn’t need a reason but some of the replies here would seem to suggest otherwise .

London Bridge - first look found one guy asleep under a duvet, didn't look like he was about to hand anything out
Old Street - not many homeless about, one guy who didn't look like he had canvases or anything. Another woman close to the station. Gave her some change and she thanked me.
Angel - No homeless whatsoever. This talk about Canvases under sleeping bags is bullshit.
Back to London Bridge for a second look around, found a few more homeless but no way did they have something to give away.
