Murakami, by Deleted on Oct 12, 2018 8:42:28 GMT 1, Hey ppl, I've been wondering, Murakami is quite popular and his work , i think of, is very sought after...why don't his prints sell out?
Is it price point? But yet still there are other artists thst release in the same price point and sell out..
Your opinion amd insight is much appreciated.
Cheers!

Murakami, by kfroms on Oct 12, 2018 9:16:24 GMT 1, I think its a mix - apart from the taste question his prints are pricey, not easy to get from source ( outside of Japan - and I don't count Perrotin as source although he is his Gallery as he charges far more then Kaikai Kiki ) and they are all editions of 300. And that makes a LOT of prints for the market.
Anyway, good opportunity to show off :-)

Murakami, by pada1 on Oct 12, 2018 11:57:35 GMT 1, Agree with what has been written above. Itโs a combination of: - accessibility: you have to be in Japan - price: they arenโt super cheap at source - quantity: few hundreds for each and when he releases, itโs several different prints. There is honestly not shortage - attractiveness: maybe more subjective, but we see his flowers everywhere (clothing, events, etc). Itโs becoming less about Art and more about Merchandising. We buy to consume not to enjoy or invest.

To me ( over here in good old London ) there is no 'fad' for Murakami. It feels more like his stuff has always been around with no high and no low.
"...the market will be flooded..." - the market is probably not flooded but there is certainly no shortage of his stuff.
I kind of gather that you are not a big fan of his! :-)

Murakami, by cjwhitey on Oct 12, 2018 14:22:33 GMT 1, Although Murakami is a cultural icon, due to his many collaborations with notable brands, his prints are all editions of 300 (as kfroms stated previously). Most of them are offset prints and I feel like the imagery is stale at this point, as he has not changed his style over the years. If you want a source of cheaper prints, I'd suggest Gallerie Perrotin: store.perrotin.com/en/28-takashi-murakami

Murakami, by Matt on Oct 12, 2018 18:42:30 GMT 1, They're almost all Lithographs... many with metallic layers. Offsets actually probably something like 80/20 offsets vs. screens, according to the great sugimoto68 "To date there are probably around 100 limited edition silkscreens in comparison to over 400 (and growing) limited edition offsets"
Most round flower balls and DOB are 4 colour offsets, , some images exist in both (e.g., 2103 vs. 2106 versions of the 727 prints), and a lot of stuff before 2013 is more likely to be a screen

Murakami, by Deleted on Oct 12, 2018 19:54:16 GMT 1, I dont agree with the 80/20 Litos to Screen, I'd say something like 95/5 at this point after the past 5 years of work.
If you have the money, I would buy a murakami silkscreen immediately. The quality is AWESOME and they are the same meothod as his original works (many OGs are mostly silkscreen). They're a pretty penny, as they're priced higher, and much more limited, but they're really incredible.

Murakami, by jluhiex on Oct 12, 2018 20:51:25 GMT 1, I own 15 or so Murakami prints. 6 are silkscreens the rest offset lithos. His edition of /300 I would venture to guess are all offset lithos. All my silkscreens are edition of /50 and /100.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with the offset lithos as many of them have the metallic layers that make them really pop. My only issue with Murakami is the re-hashing of images with slight color tweaks. I don't know how many version of "Homage to..." he has but it seems there's a re-issue every 2 years.
Of the offsets I haven't collected anything past 2010. I can't verify if there's a quality difference between the recently printed and pre-2013 lithos but his older stuff tends to command a premium. If you're looking as an investment then edition of /50, /100, older lithos are all great. Figures and plush flowerball have all really taken off thanks to the KAWS effect.

Murakami, by Dibbs 45 on Oct 13, 2018 18:12:56 GMT 1, They actually do sell out at source - most go to resellers and galleries who then sell it back to us with a huge mark up. Resellers pick them up for about ยฃ300 - sad but true.
Indeed I was offered a lithograph in a Vegas gallery for $9,000k. I said โno your alright mateโ
