Teaching kids about Banksy, by Dungle on Nov 8, 2018 23:22:51 GMT 1, I am having to teach a group of 9 year olds at my daughters school about art.
I’ve plumped for Banksy as my focus, and girl with balloon is the obvious place to start.
I’m gonna make a stencil of it with them and spray it a few times.
But has anyone got any other ideas of a way to get them enthusiastic about Banksy and engaged with the art?

Shred the art and talk about destroying capitalist structures. Or maybe it was an anti-anti-capitalist gesture because it just doubled in value.

Why not consider using a paint brush rat as the stencil and they can then try and combine their name or even a sketch by painting alongside. At least they then have an individual piece of artwork each. Suppose it depends if it's an art class or more of a demonstration?

I'd use Dismaland examples, as it was a 'kids theme park'. And please try to teach them the concept of critical thinking and leave any indoctrination out of it.

Teaching kids about Banksy, by eyectopus on Nov 9, 2018 0:23:16 GMT 1, My five year old Daughter arrived home from school with art she made a few weeks ago. The teacher gave them four different colour paper rectangles each and attached them to a black sheet they put a handprint on each section. Before this he showed them a Youtube video of Warhol, that she was able to direct me to by the background song in the video. She talked about Warhol for a weekend and I was very impressed.
Banksy could be thought in a similar way I reckon. Even a potatoe or sponge stamp could be used. Or hand out print outs of another image and alter it with stamps.

Teaching kids about Banksy, by GMA on Nov 9, 2018 9:29:26 GMT 1, Sounds like it'll be an interesting lesson, more so if they're engaged
I think spray paint would be great fun. Maybe you could make individual pieces and then at the end have one big area where everyone contributes. You could make it a group activity and split them into groups of four...getting them to discuss what they want to create, maybe a topic of interest and paint it up together.
Whatever it is, have fun.

Teaching kids about Banksy, by Hubble Bubble on Nov 9, 2018 12:03:55 GMT 1, I personally think this is a terrific piece of work. Not because of its message re: our current political situation which nine year olds needn't be burdened with (IMHO) but how art can be interpreted in different ways. For schoolchildren, to me, this can highlight the dark nature of bullying, how bullies look to others, how individuals, no matter how different, can be beautiful and should be admired and not ostracised. Possibly worth a chat? Anyway, hope it goes well.

Teaching kids about Banksy, by RoboJ on Nov 9, 2018 12:15:38 GMT 1, You could talk about the different concepts of art. Some are is designed to be stunningly beautiful and capture a moment in time. Technically brilliant artists like canneletto managed to make this look effortless. But that’s not the only way to make art. Instead you can look at the work of Banksy. It’s not technically difficult, indeed the school children can recreate his work easily within 1 lesson. However what makes it art is the way it takes your mind on a journey. The visual element of the artwork is only a key to open the art in your mind because it’s been painted to make you think about something. There are many different types of art but Banksy is one of the pioneers of this ‘mind art’. Maybe there are other classical artists you could research to see if anyone else was doing something similar.

Teaching kids about Banksy, by Hubble Bubble on Nov 9, 2018 12:49:06 GMT 1, Sounds all heavy for 9yr old kids Don't think so... I think what @roboj is saying is that kids can be taught that art isn't just Old Masters. It can be simple Stik men (if only there were an artist to use to illustrate this) but it's all about how it affects us and what it makes us think about. I quite like that as an opening for discussion with young kids.

But has anyone got any other ideas of a way to get them enthusiastic about Banksy and engaged with the art? I think it's great that you're showing them the process of using stencils and showing how Banksy's work is typically created on the street. But I would advise against using spray paints in a classroom setting. I'm guessing you're going to be indoors and in an enclosed classroom with limited or no ventilation. The fumes with spray paint are strong and lingering. You might bring a can of spray paint and a respirator mask and explain how Banksy typically works, but I wouldn't spray indoors. But use acrylic paints when you do your demonstration.

Teaching kids about Banksy, by Michael James Art on Nov 18, 2018 7:37:30 GMT 1, I think it would be fantastic to teach them that art, good art should speak to the viewer and create an emotional connection. Art doesn’t need to be elaborate or super colorful to do that. Banksy’s genius lies in his ability to convey and communicate a message or emotion by using a simple image in black or grey. While the image is simple in its execution and design, the message might be very complex and sometimes it can be controversial but what it says might be universal. You might not speak english, but you understand clearly the message. No politics. No anti government. Just about what art is and what it says to you or how it makes you feel. Chances are if you feel a certain way about things many others will feel the same way too. You would be very surprised on how in-touch children are with their feelings and emotions, and how they are able to express themselves freely without the constraints of social acceptance, filters or political correctness. The things they say and their observations are uncanny (sometimes very funny!) but always insightful. That might be a better way to teach them.
YANK!!
