Basic white frames, by cest on Dec 12, 2018 4:08:47 GMT 1, My wife is insisting that we start moving to simple white frames and "float" all we can. Is there an ikea frame that people like? Id like to get these frames from somewhere that i can consistently get the same product and if i can get it cheap- yeah. I may take a couple to a framer and frame it "archival" (switch out glass and mounting material). Examples of what i plan to frame: JW "vote" and murakami "acupuncture with flowers".

No offense but professional framing for both of those is not even that expensive I wouldn't skimp especially on the Jonas

Basic white frames, by racket on Dec 12, 2018 10:20:51 GMT 1, The frames themselves are not expensive, it's the glass and labour. To get cheap ikea frames and then pay for labour and uv glazing, somewhat doesn't make sense.

To get cheap ikea frames and then pay for labour and uv glazing, somewhat doesn't make sense. Agreed. Additionally, if you're buying Ikea frames you'll be stuck with the selection of sizes that they offer. This might work fine for certain prints, but for others you'll be left with different sized horizontal/vertical 'gaps' between the print and the frame which will look awkward.
If you must frame cheaply, find an online supplier that offers custom sized frames. Some will even offer UV glass or plexi.
However, best of all... don't be in a rush, frame things properly (and less frequently, if needs be, to suit your budget). You won't regret it in the long run.

Basic white frames, by bentheartfan on Dec 12, 2018 14:18:53 GMT 1, I generally use the thin standard white wood frame my framer has, it's nice, clean and relatively cheap compared to other frame options he has. The glass and labour are always more as others have noted. I do have some more ornate frames from the same source, when the piece calls for it

It sounds like you're assuming that combining an IKEA frame with separate, archival-grade materials (glazing, mount board, etc.) will make the end result archival.
If so, this assumption is incorrect.
Leaving aside a few exceptions, for the most part, IKEA frames are made with MDF — i.e. wood chips and resin as the adhesive (typically, urea-formaldehyde), which are then heat-compressed.
MDF is not stable enough to be considered archival. One of the recognised issues with the material is formaldehyde emissions.
Unfortunately, I am ignorant of both how and the extent to which formaldehyde gas affects works of art, especially works on paper. But it's probably safe to say the impact over time is more likely to be detrimental than either neutral or beneficial.

Basic white frames, by iamzero on Dec 16, 2018 8:29:15 GMT 1, As a general rule you get what you pay for. As for the use of MDF the biggest reason it’s generally not advised for full conservation framing (from what I can understand) is not the off gassing but the idea that it is affected by any wall moisture/ damp more than other options and can grow mould spores more easily.
