Japanese wheat paste and hinging paper., by purpleandred on Dec 12, 2018 13:12:21 GMT 1, Hi
Wondering if any UK based peeps can point me to a site which offers japanese wheat paste for sale in small quantities? All i can find is 1kg which is far more than I'll ever need, I've got a few showcards and postcard sized prints I will be framing myself. Alternatively, any framers on here willing to flog me a nominal amount? I guess I'll need some of the hinging paper too..
thank you

100grmas should be more than enough, what hinging paper did you use? I'm wondering whether there's a super cheap alternative to the traditional stuff.. seeing as these pieces are small, wondering whether any acid free paper would do the trick? (or is that sacrilege?)

Japanese wheat paste and hinging paper., by chr1s on Dec 12, 2018 15:44:46 GMT 1, You might practice the cooking of the wheatpaste with a small portion of what you are ordering. It's very easy to ruin a cooked batch of the paste (if you overcook). I have a Tefal Le Saucier cooker I use when I'm preparing wheatpaste. I use 1 part wheatpaste and 5 parts distilled water. I typically cook the paste for 30-35 minute....the advantage of the Le Saucier pot is it has built-in stirring so for the entire 30 minutes of cooking it is being stirred. It should have the consistency of syrup when the cooking is done. And as it cools it it stiffens up a bit more.
I made the video below a while back which might be helpful and you might get a sense of the consistency of the wheatpaste as I use it in the demo.

Are there any cheaper alternatives I can find as I;m really looking at doing this on a budget so too speak. They're cheap showcards and postcard prints so I'm loath to splash out on 10 sheets of hinging paper which is the least I can order.
Potentially silly question: Could I use the acid free paper/black card used to wrap prints in when shipping or the cardboard used in sleeve dividers? It's acid free and plenty sturdy enough to float mount a postcard sized print..
Thanks for the Vid, these are super informative.

Japanese wheat paste and hinging paper., by iamzero on Dec 12, 2018 18:10:36 GMT 1, I’m struggling to understand why you’re going to all the trouble of wheatpaste and then looking for cheap Japanese hinging paper. If cost is an issue why not use Hayaku hinges?
