Import costs from US, by wrigs on Jan 8, 2019 18:38:10 GMT 1, Hi guys
Apologies if covered elsewhere but can only find historical threads (with what looks to be some iffy advice) on this one.
Does anyone know what costs would be if purchasing art from a gallery/artist and importing to the UK please?

Does anyone know what costs would be if purchasing art from a gallery/artist and importing to the UK please? You'll probably be charged 20%, but it should be 5%... you'll be able to claim the rest back after though

Import costs from US, by pippyt75 on Jan 8, 2019 20:40:34 GMT 1, From my experience they always charge 20% but u can claim back 15. You can also ask the gallery / seller to mark the cost as negligible if you’re comfortable with that

Import costs from US, by Yabadabdo on Jan 8, 2019 22:20:34 GMT 1, Letterpressed It should be £52 (£40 vat £12 Parcelforce charge), which would still be too high as it should be £22 (£10 vat £12 Parcelforce). I've had several packages out with the EU over the last year, the lowest handling charge was £8 and the highest £12 though there may well be others. Only one handler charged me VAT at 5% (on behalf of HMRC). But I claimed it back where it was worth the hassle.

Import costs from US, by letterpressed on Jan 8, 2019 22:32:27 GMT 1, Thanks Yabadabdo, it was £12 Parcelforce fee. I phoned Parcelforce up and questioned the VAT and they said i had to pay the fee then get a refund! Annoying..

Import costs from US, by hippychick on Jan 8, 2019 22:45:08 GMT 1, It helps if the import tariff number is on the customs declaration otherwise "art" can fall under the same category as photographs, which is 20% import VAT.
The current codes are: - 9701100000 for paintings, drawings and pastels; - 9702000090 for original engravings, prints and lithographs (impressions produced directly, in black and white or in colour, of one or of several plates wholly executed by hand by the artist, irrespective of the process or of the material employed by him, but not including any mechanical or photomechanical process)

Import costs from US, by Deleted on Jan 10, 2019 13:11:36 GMT 1, I've always been unsure about this VAT thing. When do you qualify for the 5% VAT instead of the usual 20%? As far as I can see, limited edition prints do not come under the 5% category.

Import costs from US, by Deleted on Jan 10, 2019 13:14:12 GMT 1, I tend to order lots of stuff from abroad. Does anybody know why "ParcelForce" charge 12 pounds fee whilst I have sometimes got some items through "Royal Mail International" that charges only 8 pounds. Why the difference?

The rules are to distinguish between a mass produced/printed poster for commercial use, and something made as "Art"

Import costs from US, by ecudat on Apr 6, 2021 11:06:38 GMT 1, I know this is an old thread, but what are my chances of claiming back the extra 15% a few months later and probably without some of the required supporting paperwork?

Import costs from US, by Billy Sport on Apr 6, 2021 11:15:26 GMT 1, timing not so important, but paperwork is key, the more info you supply, the stronger your case. I have had submissions rejected and then I've sent a load more paperwork and they accepted, so best to get everything together.
original invoice , sometimes I screenshot the release (if a print) from website, customs charge sticker, paperwork filled in by gallery on customs form, charge form buy shipper and I always make a scan copy of everything in case it gets lost...

Thanks. The worst thing is I've found the commercial invoice and it has the right tariff code 970200000 on the paperwork!
To be fair, I couldn't work out from the customs website what rate actually applied, seeing as it always just says 20% or 5% - which is it you donuts!!!. Although obviously one would hope those working at customs would know. Maybe it's all part of a government scam. The truth is out there...
